  1. Hi - I am curious about how far the mic was from the musicians. I am trying to get an idea of what would be optimum. Thanks B)

This was a small pub/bar with a makeshift stage in front of one of the long couches on one side of the room. Sound was mostly off the stage direct, with only vocals and mild amounts of the instruments on the PA. How far is mostly determined by where you can hear the best sound. Usually this is very close to the mixing desk. After that, irrespective of how loud it is at that point, you can use the manual rec level setting to get the peaks in between the -12 dB and the 0dB marks on your MD Recorder. I hope I've understood your question correctly?

  2. That's why I wish there was a feature that would let you tell the recorder to switch from say PCM to HiSP when it realizes there's only 5 mins left of PCM recording time on the disc.

Yeah, that would be uber cool. But, I'm sure people will then want to decide how many min left should trigger this. Some people may want it to trigger at 10 min left or something. So, it becomes very arbitrary if not completely flexible?

  3. Which model of Sound Professionals mic were you using? Was it a one-point stereo mic or a pair?

The one-point stereo microphone. I'm currently scrounging up to buy a decent set of binaurals...

    6) mic placement matters: l+r mic need more distance in between, there's no dimension, almost mono.

Hahahaha, indeed. I have the stereo microphones that have both mics on one single mounting. So, I guess I will have to scrounge up to buy a good pair of binaurals before I can rectify this. :D

  4. Hi all,

After owning my RH1 for the past 3 months, I finally managed to record a live gig.

Lessons learnt from the evening out:

    1) Try to position the mic at head level.

    2) Get a good seat.

    3) Prepare for the entire evening before hand. This includes knowing where you blanks are, how much time you have left on your current disc etc.

    4) Always prepare for an encore.

    5) A good source matters. If the sound engineer has mixed the output well, then 90% of your job is done.

    Have a listen: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?act=m...si&img=3526

  5. What works great for me is this pair of tights that has a pocket sown in with a zipper at the back, level with the base of my spine (or slightly below that LOL). As it is flush against the body, and located at a place which doesn't swing much when you walk/run, it works great for me. Maybe you could try sowing in a pocket at this point?

  6. If you are using the RH1 the higher transfer speeds should be available with the "special" version of 3.4 that shipped with the RH1 that contains the new drivers (not with the standard 3.4) and with 4.0.

BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death - a common name for those annoying "Stop" errors that crash the OS in Windows.

Either way, i have to upgrade from my MDCF downloaded SS 3.4. Would you recommend one over the other? Or is the same whether I upgrade to the SS 3.4 that came with the RH1 or the SS 4.0?

Also, any more things I should be doing beforehand (other than what I mentioned in the initial post)?

    THanks for your help Richyhu.

  7. I read that as:

    - If you format an MD disc that has DRM'd music (i.e. stuff from CONNECT) on it, you'll lose the transfer authorisations that were used to transfer that music to the disc.

    - If you format a HiMD disc, the authorisations will be restored to the computer when you next hook the RH1 up to the PC with the newly formatted disc in the drive.

Dunno, maybe I've got it wrong?

So, if I don't use Connect there's no problem right? MP3s on my computer that I import and transfer to an MD disc (80 min) won't be affected?

  8. Any particular reason you want to upgrade? Apparantly there are no real advantages for MD users and if 3.4 does the job why bother. If it aint broke, don't fix it

From what I understand SS 4.0 in combination with the RH1 achieves higher transfer speeds, is that correct? I really don't need SS 4.0 for legacy upload because I'm a Hi-MD era user. So, if the higher transfer speeds is not true, then I won't be upgrading I guess.

Just don't be surprised if you see a blue screen or two. I just did this upgrade on one of my PCs not too long ago (actually it may have been from v3.3 to v4.0) and I got a BSOD after rebooting when the installation finished. For whatever reason, this always seems to happen when I upgrade SS. Luckily when I opened SonicStage after restarting the machine again, all the tracks were in my library, and they could still be played and transferred. Of course, I did a backup before upgrading anyway.

    What's a BSOD?

And, if I may ask, why did you choose to upgrade?

  9. I have SS 3.4 installed, and I plan to shift to SS 4.0 at the end of the month. However, I don't want to lost my library. I will back it up, and try to restore it. Is there anything else that I should do to prepare to change from 3.4 to 4.0?

    I already have:

    1) Backup my SS library and save to a different disk to restore after 4.0 installation.

    2) Uninstall 3.4 before installing 4.0.

Anything else? Any registry cleaning or manual deletions necessary before installing 4.0?

  11. What speaker outputs does the player have? Most I've seen have RCA outputs. Get an RCA - mini cable and go into the line in of your MD recorder. Mic-in is for unamplified inputs. THe speaker output of your turntable player should be giving you a line-level signal, in which case, you need to go into the line in and not the mic in.

Also, it goes without saying, that you need to switch recording level to MANUAL and then set the recording level such that the loudest passage of music you are trying to record peaks well within the two sets of dots on your MD recorder's recording level indicator.

    Hope this helps.

  12. To add to the above comments, I think using the LOW setting on Mic Sens will make the ambient noise less prominent on your recording. Are you using Mic Sens = HIGH? It's worth a try to turn this to LOW and use Rec Level = MANUAL and set the recording level so that the meters are peaking between the middle and upper dots on the MD's recording level indicator.

Also, cardioid microphones usually reject ambient noise and are more suitable for voice recordings as you don't need to capture the entire sound spectrum, just the range of frequencies covered by the human voice. You could try out recording your own voice with different mics (shotgun, cardioid, omnidirectional) at a store, if they allowed you, to see the difference in recordings.

I hope I am not unnecessarily repeating any information that you already know. Best of luck.

  13. Hi all,

I checked leibflea's store and the Li - Ion batteries listed there have only the MZ-NH1, MZ-NH3D, MZ-EH1, and MZ-DH10P listed as compatible models. Does this same battery also work with the RH1?

Also, the seller seems to have multiple listings for Aus, and US, and the UK. If I belong to none of the above countries, which one do I choose?

  14. I also saw a model that looked nice. MZ-RH710 model, but it says silver edition, is that like a special edition? Most of this model are black.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=014

I ordered a MZ-RH1, but would like a spare hi-md for travel. I particularly like what looks like a nice jog dial on this model, does any later model have a similar working jog dial?

Anyways, might be of interest to someone.

Sounds a bit dubious, especially since it says that this RH710 can recharge through USB. The RH710 does not come with rechargeable batteries, and uses the standard AA cells. Also, it does not recharge through USB. I know this because I have one.

    Definitely inconsistent info...

  15. I was just browsing through the RH1 manual again, and I noticed that under the Format function, it has notes that says:

    The Format Function:

    When formatting a disc:

When I disc is formatted, the number of transfer authorizations for the transferred track is as follows:

    • For 1 GB Hi-MD discs, the number of transfer authorizations for the transferred tracks is restored when the disc is inserted and the recorder is connected to the computer.
    • For 60/74/80-minute standard discs, the number of transfer authorizations for transferred tracks decreases by one. To prevent the reduction, restore the transfer authorization by transferring the tracks to the computer again before formatting the disc.
What the heck does that mean in English? Is there something that one needs to do before formatting a disc? This is different for 1GB discs and 80 min discs? (I have both)

    Please help.

  16. Try the manual setting and adjust the level.

I second that. Also, try two different recordings with:

    1) Mic Sens Low + Rec Level in the higher regions.

    2) Mic Sens High + Rec Level in the lower regions.

You should get a reasonable idea which one sounds best for your needs.

  17. It's definitely not Volume - Max, because when I turn my RH1's out port to Line Out, you can't hear anything on the headphones. In fact, if I recall correctly, a line level signal is infact low gain.

I rechecked this, and I was wrong. THe line out is indeed a high level signal, and may be achieved by volume - max. Though I don't know that this is true of the RH1.

  18. HUH? LOL! I believe the RH1 has a line out simply because sony wanted to market the product as both a HI MD deck as well as a HI MD portable unit. Lineout on the menu just does VOLUME-MAX+EQ OFF+SOUND NOTIFICATIONS OFF in one switch. You can accomplish lineout on any MD unit by just turning volume to max and telling the unit to mute any sound effects that are not part of the original music (beeps when paused or changing traks for example).

But yeah, I think Sony did this as a workable compromise for all the folks asking for a deck. :D

Quote:"5) RH910 can charge only through the AC adaptor. There's some sort of 'almost charge' facility when connected to a computer via USB. THe RH1 charges perfectly both through the AC adaptor and when connected via USB cable to a computer. In fact, even the wall adaptor ends in a USB plug which plugs into the USB port of the unit."

My RH910 recharges when hooked up to my Mac! I was surprised but it does.

Is it a full recharge?!
