Have any of you seen "Bad Education" by Pedro Almodovar (Gael Garcia Bernal is the main actor in the film)? You won't be able to listen to that song in the same way ever again. If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I mean... Scary!
  2. Ha ha... NICE! There are a couple of record shops near where I live that still sell quite a bit of 8-track stock. Not to mention ebay... I prefer my MD. More to the topic, have any of you ever worked in retail before? If you have, you'll know what I'm talking about: the guy that is wearing the nametag/vest/flair doesn't really know anything about the ordering practices of the corporation at large (in fact, most inventory and stock of stores is controlled at a regional or district level, meaning that stores in different regions have different stock). I can't tell you all how many times I've had to "guesstimate" about the inventory of a warehouse. Just some food for thought. Plus, an official cancellation of product would definitely be newsworthy, and would be reported either here or at minidisc.org. You can still find MDs/HiMDs, but it'll probably take a little more driving (especially if you don't live in an urban area).
  3. I have a Technics as well. Needless to say, it gets a lot of use at home.
  4. "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby (an absolute must-read book for anyone who listens to music) and a 4 pack of Boddington's Pub Ale.
  5. For me, it's a tie between James Brown and Queen. I think there's only one reason: raw, unbridled energy.
  6. Thanks for the advice guys. Rayzray, you said that in your opinion, you wouldn't do it (that is, back up a record by recording it to MD with an optical toslink connection through a receiver) that way. What way would you suggest? I'm new to using the MD as a recording device (previously just used it as portable audio playback) and am eager to explore new ways to get the most out of MD. Any insight would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
  7. Hey everybody, Does anyone here know of a good quality 2 channel receiver with an digital/optical out? Phono in would be a plus; I'm looking to backup some records with my MD unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I apologize if this topic was posted in the wrong spot.
  8. I'd probably have to say my current favorite (and most likely all time favorite) album is David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust." With this album, Bowie rebooted rock and created both an aural and stylistic archetype that is still being widely used. Good call on Nas' "Illmatic" though (my 2nd favorite). Da Bulls.
  9. I just received my dry battery pack and it works great with the N1. Thanks for the help!!! I would have never have found out how to find a solution without it.
  10. Okay, so someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but the 'linear' of 'linear pcm' is a modulation of analog recording? Digital recording and playback is random-access, while analog recording is sequential. I've heard that the reason why people prefer analog recording and playback is because a sequential playback/recording happens 'in time' and therefore is less likely to result in audio artifacting during playback and recording. So... that's what the linear part is (I think): sequential (or at least semi-sequential) recording with a digital source. Sorry if I'm wrong.
  11. Yeah, the closing of Tower is really sad. I spent most of my angsty teenage years in that store. Oh well; end of an era and all... BTW: The Flaming Lips' "Fight Test" and "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" EPs are what I most recently purchased- some of the covers on those EPs are both hilarious and intriguing (Kylie Minogue???).
  12. Thank you kindly for the reply and the info. I am located near Chicago, Illinois in the United States. I think that either the ebay store or the Sony supply store will be quite helpful. Just one more question: while I doubt this is a legitimate concern, I am curious if my Japanese MZ-N1 will experience any power problems with an US dry battery case. Thanks again for the help. It just goes to show that one of the best things about being an MD owner is meeting other people who share the same interest.
  13. Oh, and if this clears anything up, I mean the black "dry battery case" that requires an AA battery that plugs into the bottom of the unit.
  14. Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone here at the forums knew anything about purchasing an extra/additional battery pack for an md unit. I bought a used MZ-N1 (Japanese market) recorder, and to my displeasure, came with no battery pack. Any thoughts? -Ed P.S. This is my first post, so if I have committed any newbie faux pas, please forgive me.
