  1. Greetings all. I'm still a newbie when it comes to recording with my RH1, but last night I got my first chance to do a live recording. This was an outdoor free concert on the grass in Camarillo, CA. Probably 1500 attendees. I was about 300 feet away from the stage. I recorded the entire 75 minute concert with my RH1 using a mic that I made using 2 $1.29 electret mics that I got off the Internet. [used plug and wiring from a set of ear buds and a 'T' of plastic tubing and friction tape] I am totally blown away by the sound quality. Sure, there are neighboring voices and laughter but this is an 'unplugged' performance. If anyone ever doubts that the RH1 is a fantastic piece of technology I would like them to tell me what is better. Belever
  2. Greetings all- I'm wondering if anyone has successfully found a way to use Sony's proprietary UMD (Universal Media Disc) with a MZ-RH1? Or an interface to a PSP via USB cable? I find it frustrating that Sony attempts to make every G%^&* thing they bring to market proprietary. They lose every time. I think they have the business model of " We don't want customers, we want Hostages". thanks in advance. kaw
  3. While researching differences in DVD media I was pleasantly surprised to find very generous review of HiMD and sony minidisc on Wikipedia. Here is the URL in case anyone would like to read it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc kaw
  4. Well, you've certainly peaked my interest. Where does one find the 40ELK and how much should one expect to pay? Thanks for busting my budget once again.

    Mz Nh1 Crash

I have never experienced the problem you are having, but I was getting some weird resets on track to track. I reformatted HiMD disc and it never happened again. I always reformat any new HiMD disc that I purchase before using. I have no idea of what device was used in manufacturing to format. All FAT is not the same.
  6. Greetings, Here is an FYI- I just found Sony 1GB HiMDs at Fry's. All they had were single packs @ $7 each + tax. But, to me that was a great find. And, I had $1 and change left over. Their 99cent coffee is better than Starbucks so I had one. I would buy online buy most of the time the shipping charges are out of line @ $6 to $8.
  7. Thanks. I think that is the info I needed. And, your reply was the only rational reply posted. Charging gumsticks is a different issue. I would think that it should be possible to construct a charge by cannibalizing some other charging station and using the NH1 power brick to energize it.
  8. Do they work "as well" as original Sony product? I guess Li batteries of a certain size/package will produce the exact same power output.
  9. Greetings, I am losing my patience with "Low Battery" syndrome on my RH1. I'm sure you've all been there. What's with this 19 hours that they claim the battery will perform? Must be with it turned off. Anyway, local dealers want an astounding $90 for a battery. That's insane. Now, on eBay, there are a ton of sellers from China with Sony LIP-4WM for sale at $6 to $10 plus ship. Has anyone every bought one of these? Are they really Sony LIP-4WM batteries? The sellers that I looked at all have good customer feedback and 99%+ positive sales records. For the price, I may just try one. Thanks
  10. MZ-NH1 is my first and only MD recorder. I researched the web and this forum before buying from B&H Photo using their "BillMeLater" service. I am amazed how neat it is. I'm slowly coming up to speed on its huge feature set. As I have no sound recording background it has been a fairly steep learning curve. My reason for this purchase is that I am making a Super8 film. Had to have a way to record sound effects and clips from here and their. My only complaint on the NH1 is that the buttons on the control are hard to see. I used a bit of White-out to hi-lite the letters and symbols. My eyes are not as young as most of the members of this forum.
  11. I love this site, but I love other sites, too. And, I don't have enough time in the day to plow through every new post. No offense. I would love to see this site change how it displays new posts. Options are at minimum: Have one window that shows all of the new posts for the day, 2 days, etc. All forums included. Or, show that last 20-30 posts by reply that will take you to the post in the proper forum. For examples take a look at filmshooting.com and cinematography.com. thanks for your interest.
  12. I made the mistake of upgrading SS from 4.2 to 4.3 before I read the disastrous results reported by users of this forum. Thanks guys. Here is valid USA URL: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download...amp;template=EN I also busted my XP laptop so a re-install will be required. Just say no to dual boot systems. They will bite you in the ass eventually! OH, I did attempt to find the SS 4.2 on this forum's download. It was not there.

    Audacity

Greetings all, I found what I think is a fairly decent audio editing software: Audacity. It is opensource freeware. You can download it at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/. Additionally, there is a plug_in download with 90 different special effect plugins. And, there's more: you can also download a LAME software that allows your source to be converted to MP3. I personally downloaded the beta version. So far it seems stable. If I find a bug I will let the programmers know. I am not an expert on editing audio tracks but this program seems to offer a great deal of powerful tools. I hope I can figure it all out. I will ask my fellow Minidisc users to help me if I get totally stuck. So, take a look at Audacity. Runs on all platforms, installs easily and seems pretty cool. And, it's FREE!
  14. Great news for us rh1 users. Where did you find the proper optical cable and how much does it cost? Also, after you finish your testing what's the possibility of you re-organizing your topic and maybe we can get it pinned. It would be helpful if you could describe what all of you hardware parts are, model numbers etc. I'm especially interested in your Optical to USB converter. I looked for such an object some time ago but never found one.
  15. One more question: How do "WAV" files compare to ATRAC? I am working on a super 8 film and I want my recordings to be a perfect as I can get them. What other choices do I have?
  16. Thanks, Syrius. I think your reply should become a separate topic and be pinned. I can't be the only bloke having issues on understanding how this part of the technology operates.
  17. Hi all, I am attempting to further my knowledge of how my RH1 and SS 4.2 work. Not real impressed with Sony's idea of good software design. As a starting point I'd like to find out what file does what. Here is listing from Windows Explorer: Hope this shows up. Item next- SS 4.2 docs say that I should be able to transfer a track from my HiMD to a removable disk such as a memory stick. The only item that shows up is my D: drive which is a CD/DVD rewritable. Apparently SS 4.2 can only write to a formatted disk as it spent about 40 minutes formatting a CD-RW. The software finally transfered selected tracks. SS created one directory with tracks. However, it is not very polite as to file naming. None of the original filenames were preserved. Here is jpeg of file list: I hope I'm not being too dumb on these issues. So far I have not been able to find info as to what does what. Thanks in advance for any and all information.
  18. Website returns Site not found error.

    Buying LIP-4WM

Some guy is listing Sony LIP-4WM batteries @ $4.99US. $10 shipping. Is this a scam? http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Lithium-Ion-Batte...5QQcmdZViewItem On further review product is located in China. Seems it's legit. Buy it now price is $7 to $9. Ship @ $10. Long ways away. Do ebay Search on LIP-4WM.
  22. Happy New Year everyone. I have MZ-RH1 and I love this device. It is first and only MD I have ever owned. Over Christmas I was way too busy to use it so I removed the Hi-MD disc. Today I started a recording with just battery power. Low and behold the lights went out. It is now on the charger and says it needs a 60min charge. How is power being drained? Is there a setting that keeps some feature in the ON position? Thanks for your help.
  23. Buena Vista Social Club on my RH1. Copied from my CD on IBM laptop using SS4.0. Buena Vista Social Club is a bunch of very old native Cubans rescued by a music promoter. How he got them out of the country is beyond me. Probably lots of $ for Castro. Anyway, these old guys are great if you like Cuban music. I'm not Cuban, don't speak Spanish. Still like them. I must say that I hear stuff on the RH1 that I never heard on my stereo.
  24. How do I wire it up if the mics have 2 wire plus a ground?
