I too just got a N510 after a short time away from MD's, I still can't afford anything better. so I keep hunting down cheap MD units so far, I bought a Sony N510 and a Sharp MS-721 in just one week. my wish list is a HI MD unit but I doubt I could find one priced at $30 or so. I haven't listened to my old mix discs yet on the 510.

which brands have plastic shutters?

the more I record, the more I learn. I've learned to put the md unit on hold after I press record, there's been a few times where I've messed with the unit and probably pressed the stop button in my pocket.

advice on buying from Microphone Madness and file transfer
tiberiusbeekirk replied to joteo's topic in Live Recording
I never bought any Memorex until the bunch I rec'd with a used MD unit. I removed the labels from the Memorex MD's and it's labeled as HIspace. The unopened one's are Made In France on the wrapper and Made in E.C. on the disc. These are all 74min discs. -
I finally got the chance to try out my linkwitz mod caps. I used a utility knife to cut the orig. ground and a nipper to cut some of the housing to make a level surface for the new ground. I think I ruined one because the output was very very low. So, I used my last WM-61a capsule. I don't notice much a difference between the mod and un-modded caps, I'll see when I make actual show recordings.

wow, you're right. I had a R500 and sold it, for some reason it was very noisy and took forever to advance tracks. and took a long time to start up. I'll look into these S2's.

That backlight must be nice. I like the cost of your setup. awesome. I see you're using hot glue. I just made another pair of mics using some CAT5 cables. I'd figure the light colors would blend in with light colored shirts in the summer.

How to build a Stereo Microphone and Battery Box

Is the mod you're talking about where I cut the trace for the Ground and use the other pad as ground making a connection to the outside edge of capsule and the original cut ground pad as (+)? Would your DIY battery box work with this mod? Only because I just made this mod with some short lead wires just now. -
How to build a Stereo Microphone and Battery Box

Someone on another board opened a commercially made BB and it appears they were using metallized film caps. At least, that's what it looks like they were to my untrained eyes, they were yellow, with axial leads and took up a lot of space in the box. -

Is there a reason to use the Battery box through MIC in, instead of LINE in? -
How to build a Stereo Microphone and Battery Box

I want to thank Greenmachine for his tutorial again. I just made a T-style mic as a carry around mic for those times I find myself needing to record something. I've found it easier to make a T style mic than a dual mono type mic going into a 3.5mm stereo plug. My soldering is getting better. The panasonic wm61's fit perfectly into a Bic Round stic pen. I just ordered the parts for your battery box. I hope I can do it. I want to thank Tangerine for his helpful schematic. If anyone is interested, my first binaural recording is up in the gallery section. Your comments are most welcome. edit, rec'd the parts today. My goodness, those resistors are tiny and I ordered the wrong PC board, it holes are smaller and spaced tighter. How do I cut these to size? found out why the resistors are so small, I ordered the Panasonic 1% metal film MINIATURE ones. take two, I finished it. however it's not the way it is per the DIY. My first try only had sound in the right channel, then my second try had no sound to both channel. So I deviated from the photos of GM's BB and went with Tangerines block diagram. I just used some wire to go from the input to the Caps and resistors. It works, I'm working on my second one. -
I wish I was at the Eric Clapton concert, my sis got a pair of free tickets for Saturday and she's going with her husband. I found my DIY panasonic mics are much more sensitive than my other DIY unit made from some PC mics. I'm sure they'll pick up lots of bass but I don't mind unless it's overpowering. We'll see, I only recorded one show with them. Practice makes perfect. I don't know about the N707 but with my two MD units, the R700 and R500, there's no numbered level for manual recording, just a graphic of a bar to +. but I noticed the range is the same as other Units. 30 clicks to max.

I learned a lot from this section of the forum. Both from Greenmachine and A440, I too am moving up in the food chain of MD recording. I say MD recording because it's not mentioned often in taperssection. I still don't know what a pre amp does in regards to using it with a MD unit. Maybe, I'm dense, who knows. I keep on hearing words such as "brick walling" and overloading and this is what frightens new recorders like me. I made a recording of what I thought was going to be a loud show using the RS in line voulume control as an attenuator and I recorded it at too low a level for fear of overloading. I will trust what my Fellow MD users are saying regarding Battery boxes. And, what I've found out in hours of research (here and in T board) was, Stick with a Battery box, no bass roll off. I don't hear many MD users mention Pre amps so I cannot comment on what I haven't seen. You can always fix the bass in post. but you can never get it back if you don't have it. So to the OP, pre amp or Battery box, the above was what I've found to be the consensus. Just my .02, your mileage may vary. and probably will.
