That's odd, it shows here as 260x188, and that's in 3 different browsers.

Repaired! I understand the need to keep the weight down for portable minidiscs, but the tiny pieces of plastic that hold the keys together are shockingly fragile. The red arrows indicate where the plastic broke. You might be able to see superglue on the top one, which wasn't the success I hoped for. I took it apart again, made a pin sized tip for my soldering iron and melted the plastic together. I'm not taking bets on how long it will last, but it's working for now. I uploaded the original at 640x480

Could have sworn I already posted this today, but I can't find it anywhere. Memory playing me tricks again I suppose. Anyway, I just bought an N710 off ebay and the 5-way control key is very loose. Just touching the key lightly near the Vol- part can bring up the Edit menu or End. That is strange in itself as the menu and end buttons are away from the 5-way key. I might attempt to take the top off to see if it's possible to repair it, but first I thought I'd ask if anyone has a service manual for it. Anyone?

I wouldn't inflict Lemmy's voice on anyone! The deck just turned up and I'm chuffed with it. It's a definite improvement over playing through the NHF800 headphone socket.
-
Yes, I knew that. I have a couple of hundred 74 minute discs still in original format, so the deck will hopefully give my hi-fi a new lease of life. I've been listening to portables through headphones for the last few years but after plugging the NHF800 into the amp yesterday, I got the bug again. I'd forgotten how good my 20 year old KEF's are. I hope my neighbour enjoys them just as much.
-
Thanks for moving the post, though it's redundant now as I decided to buy the deck. I put the post in Technical as it was originally just meant to be about the output from the headphone socket of the NHF800 being enough to drive the aux on the amp. The deck was an afterthought.

I've possible chance of a JE480 for 40 UK pounds. Original UK price 120UKP. Anyone know if it would be worth it, considering it could be 4 years old? Second question - would there be any difference in palyback quality rather than using my NHF800 through the amp. I just this morning found that the NHF800 headphone output will drive the aux input adequately. (Oddly enough, the amp, a Cambridge A1, has both aux inputs and video inputs, and the 800 will drive both OK, yet my Sharp MT280H will only drive the video input, and not the auxillary.) I guess I'm asking you folks to make my mind up for me whether to buy the deck or not, but hey, isn't that why you are here? Of course, I could buy it just because it's an endangered species, because it looks nice, and because the remote would hopefully be handy.

I normally use Mad Frontend for converting to wave.

np: discolor - [l (september gurls cd 1997) - 1997] #3 - wind comes (04:18), but in 30 minutes I will be listening to a band called "60's Mix". I don't think I will be taking my MD.

Yes - Yesterdays. Recorded from vinyl via Linn Sondek in 1998, complete with scratches and pops. Who needs digital?

I tried the other two mp3's you sent and they also convert OK here. I may have another try at tracking the problem down when I have some spare time, but since it doesn't happen with every track, I've given up on it for the time being.

Adding trackmarks while playing audiobooks for review
curls replied to prodigyresources's topic in Software
Easiest way is probably to split the file into a number of smaller files, say 5 minutes long, before downloading to MD. There are programs that can do this automatically. -
I replied by email so I guess you didn't get it. Anyway, the one you sent converted OK on my computer. Very strange. I found a couple more that won't transfer successfully, but after 3 days of trying things, I am still no wiser as to why it happens. I have a rip of Tubular Bells as 2 big mp3's, neither of which will convert. Yet all the others are single tracks taken from CD's which were all encoded with the same version of Lame and with the same settings. All my tags are done by the same program and in the same format. I've given up on it for the time being. If I get anymore I will just convert the offending track to wave and transfer again.
-
Oops! I didn't realise that.

How big is VMWare and how much Windows does it install? If it's a big installation, I may as well stick to dual-booting. My normal XP Pro directory is around 750 meg.
-
If you wouldn't mind sending one or two, it'll give me more to go on. I've transferred quite a lot over the last few days and all have been OK, but no doubt it will happen again eventually.

Menu - REC set - SYNC set - SYNC off See page 42 of the manual

Panzerschreck, 8 meg is no problem. It's all relative, my mp3's are much bigger.

I've spent most of the day so far trying to figure out the cause of this problem. Removing the v2 tags makes no difference, but removing the first 40 frames of the mp3 makes it convert OK. I suppose it's possible it could be something put in by the program used to tag, but unless it was iTunes, I have no way of knowing what was used. Another thought was that it might be the headers from Lame v3.97b, but I've encoded some more with the same settings and they are OK. I could do with some more mp3's to work with, and I never made a note of which of mine weren't converting properly, except for 2, so if anyone would be willing to send me a couple of the offending mp3's - small ones preferably - you can email them to me at haydut1200 (at) gmail (dot) com and I'll see if I can get to the bottom of this.

I installed 4.2 yesterday and still got the same problem. Unfortunately, when I went back to 3.4, I found another mp3 that converted to silence on the MD, but would play back in SS if the scroll bar was moved, as pointed out by Robert. So my suggestion to use 3.4 was a bad one, for which I apologise. It looks like converting to wave first, or re-encoding, (not advisable), is the only way to go. If you really must convert to wma, there's a freeware converter at http://softwaredepo.com/audio_converter.html It'll convert to wave and wma, as welll as a few other formats.

I haven't tried this so I don't know if it actually works, but I have read that if you give the user admin rights, install a program whilst logged in as that user, then take away the users admin rights, the user retains admin rights to that program. It's worth a try. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything - at all - ever. I know this because my wife is always telling me I am irresponsible. edit: I found the website where I read it: http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/pc/tech/rwar_notes.php

In theory there should be no reason for going back to v3.4, but if v4.0 isn't working correctly, then there's a good case for it, especially since v3.4 converts OK where v4.0 doesn't. Of course, converting to wave first works, but also gets rid of the tags, entailing a lot of typing if you want artist and track names to be shown. Robert, you can convert to wave, transfer to your MD and then delete the waves, making sure not to delete your original mp3's of course. I also delete the oma files after transfer as I only play the original mp3's from the computer. edit: I wonder if SS has a problem with the headers from certain versions of LAME, since re-encoding seems to work OK. Not something many people would want to do, but as I have bad tinnitus, it's not a big problem for me.
-
Try converting the mp3's to wave before importing and transferring to MD. I had the same problem with SS v4.0. I am actually using v3.4 now which converts and plays OK - so far.

I have a 25 meg RAR of v4.0 that I removed Connect from, if anyone wants it. Support for AAC may be missing as well, but as I have no use for that format I didn't check. It has to be installed manually and there are 5 setup files to run. Everything works fine for my use, which is mainly transferring MP3's to minidisc. (Although I'm using v3.4 at the moment, but that's another story. )
