MZ-M100 error attempting to transfer undamaged tracks
Strungup replied to illustrata's topic in Software
Audacity will record from line in . Open Audacity , then upper left on the Toolbar at the top of the screen Klik the "Audacity " for the drop down , then klik Preferences , "Audio I/O " in that pane selct the line in as default Now close Audacity and open it back up ( It has to register the actions you did in preferences) now with Audacity open You will see in the upper right of Audacity Window , a set of meters klik on the input meter (Right Side ) and start the MD ( Which you have connected to the line in) if you have set the MD to line level out , then the slider with the Mic symbol under the transport controls in Audacity becomes your Rec Level. I am kind of at a loss , about the MD Transfer , once installed .. when you connect the MD , it SHOULD recocnize it and on your desktop the MD Transfer Icon should show up , if it does ... Double klik the Transfer Icon and a Window Pane will open with the Md displayed or a Blank window with "No Device detected" If you get that , I wonder if the USB port on the MD might have a problem. Just try the Transport once again , this way #1 Make sure it is in the Applications folder , also open "Activity Monitor" in Utilities ( Finder -> Go-> Utilities-> Acitivity Monitor) #2 in the "Network" Tab of Acitivity monitor look for "mdimport" showing 3 threads in the threads field. then Scroll down a little and look for a Blue Icon , that says HI-MD Monitor , showing 2 threads , and 9 megs of memory usage If those two things are there then MD Transfer is working .( we are doing some trouble shooting here) #3 Connect the MZ-100 with a disc in it that has been recorded in Hi MD mode (HiSP , HiLP ,PCM, either is fine) #4 look on your desktop for a Blue icon that says "MD Transfer" and double klik it . If a window opens showing files then the MD is ok , #5 select which files ( By highlighting them ) that you want to import and klik "Import files" They will be on your desktop . The need for a clean desktop becomes apparent here , other wise you scouting and looking -
MZ-M100 error attempting to transfer undamaged tracks

The Edirol has an issue with the Battery cover ( extremely Breakable) ,although it does run on AA's .I have used both , and I own the RH1 The thing about MD is it is Tangible , The audio quality is what it is , Good. The mics that are built in the Edirol are OK , but you would want a nicer mic , which then brings you right back to being in the same situation as MD Battery life is the only thing about the RH1 that gets me ( I use the 40 elk remote and have all the control I need) But a USB power pack solves the Battery issue nicely . so I can get (If I wanted to ) 34 hours of live on 1 disc . at better qualty than mp3 Edirol wont give you that . A 2gb SD card is 13 hours at lowest quality ( which is 64kb mp3) Its USB port is INSIDE the battery cover , which means you have to open it to get to the USB . What the Edirol does have is Reverb for Playback ,( not bad but not Great reverb , ) it does have Optical Out which is nice ,MD does not have that. But very useful for transfering TO MD . Edirol will look like an External Hard disc to you computer , RH1 needs MD Tranfer 2.0, but the files come in the same type ...WAV . What looks cooler , a stack of SD cards with little tiny lables that you cant read or , A cool folder of Multi colored MD's each with Favorite albumns and custom mixes on them , oh and you can play MP3's as well. just drag and drop into MD transfer (as long as their sample rate is 44.1 and not 48 khz) RH1 , wins by a ..... Very cool remote cable length (40 ELK ) ps , if you need any help with Audacity PM me for the tips and tricks ( I have used Audacity for a LOOOOOONG time) -

I wish I could help but I am not a SS user , I am on a Mac , ... BUT I will agree with 440 on the backup issue but what I would do is make Audio CD's out of everything before you do . Just in case , that way you will still have Audio files to work with.

Well , I play a broad range of styles , but my Original stuff is VERY Michael Hedges, I luved Hedges story telling ability and technique , I also like Acoustic Alchemy , Strunz and Farah , Paco de Lucia, James Taylor ( Yes I said it , Fire and Rain is a Great song) , I like a lot of the 70's Acoustic stuff ,C.S.N. (Southern Cross, Guenniviere, etc) Seals and Crofts ( Summer Breeze , and a few others) I like good Fingerstyle guitar , with Harmony chords and more complex structures, basically . -

Q: Any harm in leaving RH1 connected via USB?

Sparda hit the nail on this one ,... definately Take the Battery out , if you leave it plugged up ther would be no problem other than the Battery. -
With MD , there are two types . The Player model , which does exactly that "Play " No recording features , the model numbers will give some indication , especially among older units. Example , MZ-R50 ... MZ-E50 , Which one records? obvious in this case. ( By the way if you find an R50 that is working you will have a nice machine) When you get to some of the newer( 97 and later) models , then you get to Net MD , the model Numbers will be different MZ-N"" whatever number , the Net MD's arent built as rugged as the models that were built before them. But they give you computer connectivity, And can be found fairly reasonble. Then comes the HI MD a whole new breed of MD , These can use the new 1 GB discs and record in a newer version of ATRAC . these discs cannot be played on older units . So as you stated , Tape recorder like functions .... in other words , simple . My favorite at the moment for that Kind of simpleness is my Kenwood DMC-F5R (there is that "R" let's you know it records) For quality of sound the Sony MZ-R50 , the most dependable MD that was ever made , and very hard to find ( exept from someone who doesnt know the machine) The newer MD's are menu based , all the controls are hidden in the menu's , so you might not feel comfortable with them . http://minidisc.org/sony_overview.html ( this link is to an Overview of the history of MD) http://minidisc.org/very_faq.html (this link is for "Newbies) actually everone should read it http://minidisc.org/equipment_browser.html ( everything you ever want to know about an MD , Bookmark this one because you will go back to it often while your shopping. http://minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-R50.html ( My Baby ) http://minidisc.org/part_Kenwood_DMC-F5R.html ( Most Tapelike one , also very likable) mine is just plain pretty Have fun , and welcome to MD , you wont look back .

Just get a Step down Tranformer with it , 40or 50 watt should be sufficient , they are on 100 volts , the US 120 ( which ranges from 117 - 135 depending on the time of day and Load ) would be to much indeed. Step down trans are much cheaper than step up , and much smaller too.

Dang ...I wish I played , that is a nice Fiddle The patina and wear, on it is very nice indeed ( I am a Luthier , I could build it ...but I cant play it go figure) -
Actually Booj , what he said is somewhat true , what happens is the Dynamics of the Mic get limited , and arent as lively or sensitive , so a lot of the delicate aspects of the sound will be diminished quite substantially . There is a ( for lack of a better word at the moment ) Bouncyness to a good mic thru the Mic input carefully controlled. Even if you can obtain the same level thru the line input , the dynamics will be different , because of the Impedance load values.
