Just a heads up for those looking for an alternative online music service to Sony’s Connect (US and Europe) and Mora Japan; Oricon Ltd. of Japan has announced on May 26, 2005 that they will offer ATRAC3plus music files via its online music distribution service known as ORICON STYLE sometime in September, 2005.

Currently, ORICON STYLE offers only WMA format and at its press release, there’s no mention of what bit rates will be offered. We know that Sony Connect and Mora only offer ATRAC3 132kbps. Hopefully, ORICON STYLE will recognize that there's demand for ATRAC3+ 256kbps. Nonetheless, this is a good sign as an alternate online music distribution service sees potential growth in the ATRAC format.

I will NEVER spend my hard earned $$ for ATRAC3 132kbps music. Feeling stupid enough just having to put up with their Sonic Stage DRM limitations, but to be able to purchase ATRAC3 at 132kbps ONLY is just insulting.

Let us buy Lossless music or if I am desparate enough may be at least 256kbps. Hope Oricon Style will be more receiptive to listeners like myself.

What is Oricon outside of this music service? A generic media company? Is there any plans of bringing this service outside of Japan?

One thing that really irked me about Connect + Mora is that they weren't interlinked. It would be excellent if we could purchase tracks from Mora in North America.

Oricon Ltd. is indeed a media, communications service and music database related company and it's listed in the Osaka Securities Exchange. As for ORICON STYLE, I doubt it will expand its music distribution service outward; but I don't think that will restrict online music purchase from outside Japan.

As for Mora Japan, I suspect a valid credit card would be sufficient (I don't think there's IP restrictions) to facilitate a transaction from North America. Nevertheless, I will need to try it to be sure.

That's why it's nice that I have like 50 free downloads...I don't worry about paying, lol!

As for Oricron, that'd be killer if they released a US service.

I'm just posting to say I saw ORICON STYLE and suddenly started laughing really hard. I'm sorry. Ishi might know what I'm feeling now... think oricon and its usual connotation, what the name is short for, etc etc, and put that next to the word style. that's like saying BILLBOARD CHIC to any american...

Speaking of high bitrate downloads, wasn't there some experimental venture doing exactly that in Japan. And of course there are other ones all over the world, none of them have gotten very far yet.

I'll never again pay for DRMed lossy/compressed music of any format.

Here in Canada there is no Sony Connect service. Apart from certain Russian services the only online music stores we have (AFAIK) are Puretracks.com and i-Tunes, and both use DRM .wma or .aac so that is out.

If I can't find the CD I want I'll pay for MP3 versions at 192kbs from Allofmp3.com, if they have it. Note that while it is legal for them to sell in Russia, and legal for me to download in Canada, it might not be for persons from other countries. I wasn't even going to mention the name of AllofMP3.com but then I saw Kurisu already did lol.
