MDMLXXIII
Has been hunting for Sony ECM-MS907 all over the town and finally got it. As it could be expected, the record audibility is low even if I set the record level to maximum (30/30) on my Hi-MD recorder. Could anyone advice a pre-amp model to use with this mic? Something compact but strong enough to secure a good recording at 15/30? Thanks for any tips!
Christopher
I would suggest you do some more reading in this forum [specifically "Live Recording"], searching, and checking out websites such as reactivesounds.com, soundprofessionals.com, etc. Run some searches and you'll find what you need. mrsoul
If I am not mistaken, that mic is a powered mic. You really want to avoid a preamp with powered mics cause you might get a lot of noise with that setup. I don't think that mic will run without a battery and I don't think it will run off the phantom power of a preamp. Your best bet is get something that has a mic in instead of line in OR get a mic and preamp combo (a mic that doesn't have a battery power source). Hope that helps some, I have been through a similar searches and had to learn the hard way. My AT822 has a battery source and I can't use it with a preamp so I usually go mic in with a very low mic level and low sens. Try Church Audio on Ebay or Reactive sounds for a good combo of mic and preamp. You might still be able to get rid of that Sony mic on Ebay or you could use a recorder that has a mic in connection. MDMLXXIII
Thank you Mark, that's something I would call a 100% sure way. I've been reading though a number of sources yesterday and it looks like you are right. Some vendors (like FEL www.felmicamps.co.uk) offer suitable devices (e.g., minijack-minijack mic preamp) but without a battery inside. Meaning that using them on my reader's line in is no use. The same FEL promise to launch a battery operated model soon, they call it an MP3 Mic Preamp, which would be suitable for devices without a mic input. However, your comment about noise multiplication sounds a solid argument. Before giving up on ECM-MS907, I'll try to hunt for an affordable 2-channel mixer keeping that "noise issue" in mind. Thanks again. I'll be posting further experiences.
glauber
I'm disappointed with the 907. The stereo quality is good, but i've been having lots of hiss with mine.
MDMLXXIII
I've contacted FEL people and it looks like they are able to ship a mic preamp specially suited for line input recordings. Let's give it a try. I'll be back with a quick report on whether it improved it or not.
Christopher
Did it end up improving?
bjsilva
When I got my first MD recorder (MZ-R30) I was using the 907 and found the levels to be plenty adequate - in fact I never even needed to switch to high sensitivity. This is with live piano recording. I then got an R50 and used the 907 happily until I got an AT822. I did not notice the levels on audio technica to be significantly higher. I still use that mic with my NH1 now. Not sure what's up with your 907. Though the AT822 is a reasonably inexpensive ($299?) stereo mic with a much cleaner sound. glauber
I use a MS907 (Sony) with Sharp MT190 MD recorder. Most of what i record is acoustic live music, and i find the levels are not sufficient. I have to use high gain in the Sharp, and this is introducing hiss (i figured out that the hiss starts when the MD's mic preamp switches to high gain, i.e., beyond level "20"). MDMLXXIII
I am still in the process of getting the FEL's preamp. PayPal ignores Russian cardholders, so I have to learn making wire transfers from my card account. You ought to be a financial director if you need to buy stuff from Russia via the Internet:) I really hope this external preamp will fight the insufficient recording levels for me while keepin hiss out. To be continued...
