lacobo
Oh what a joy to fit 30 CD's on one disc. Maybe not for serious music, but for comedian oneman (or onewoman) shows it's a great invention. I have now 3 discs with all my comedian stuff on it (close to 100 CD's). I remember the day's of the 1st generation minidisc gear: I recorded a show in mono, ripped out the songs and replaced them with the stereo versions. A lot of work for 2 hours fun. And now: The complete shows in (almost) stereo on one tiny 11 dollar disc (this includes mail costs from Japan to the Netherlands). As I stated in the subject: I'm one happy Hi-LP user! I can tell you something : I have read all the technical stuff that some people like tu publish in these forums, but the truth is that I don't really care what Other people say, for My ears there's NO difference between HI-SP and HI-LP and I really enjoy having more than 34 hours of music in each 1GB disk. I have more Music than the time I need to Enjoy it. Greetings from Chicago.

On the other hand, I agree completely that each user's experience is unique to them, and if you're happy with what you're hearing, that's all that actually matters. Cheers. And One more thing that we have to thank Sony is that with HI-MD, You can choose whatever suits your tastes better : PCM, HI-SP OR HI-LP. lacobo
For music from Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, John and Vangelis and the Dutch Marco Borsato, Herman van Veen etc. Ill use Hi-SP, because that music is too ritch in itself to loose any details. If only Sony had thought of an inbetweet to Hi-LP and Hi-SP it would have been perfect. But we don't live in a perfect world, don't we? aeriyn
This is in the wrong forum... Since I don't use Hi-MD, I can't honestly make any statements here, except that I know Hi-LP, while worlds better than LP4 (ugh), still sounds like mud. The differences between compression modes become more apparent the more closely you listen to them. Take a song and record it in Hi-LP, then sit down with a pair of big comfy headphones in a nice comfy chair in a silent room. If you do this I guarantee you'll be able to pick out most of the compression artifacts. If I do this with even old SP-mode recordings, I can occasionally hear an artifact or two. However, if you don't want to start hating Hi-LP, I suggest you never do this. I used to record all my music in LP2 mode until I realized how icky it sounded to my ears by listening to it in a quiet room with good-quality cans. ATRAC 4.5 for me, thank you very much. 292kbps of old-school MD goodness! ... yeah I know eventually Hi-SP will be noticeably better than ATRAC 4.5. One day. Maybe when Sharp makes some Auvi-equipped Hi-MD units. And Sony makes an actual Hi-MD deck.
