Groups/albums help!

Hi, I'm fairly new to all this HD stuff and am just getting used to using my new MZNH900.

Can anyone pse tell me, as I can't seem to find an explanation in the manual, what is the difference between a group and an album? I have recorded a whole 1Gb disk, using SonicStage, and each seperate album name also has a corresponding Group name (exactly the same as the album name). Is it possible to create a group, say called Bowie, and move all of the albums by Bowie into that group? If not, what is the point in having seperate groups and albums?

Another question rolleyes.gif , is it possible to, for instance, search by artist, then list all of the albums by that artist and not just see a long list of all the tracks by that artist? I am not finding the search/navigation facility very user friendly. I often use the jog wheel to go down the list of albums, see one who I am not sure who the artist is and have to play a sample to find out who it is  Why can't the artist's name be displayed next to album names when scrolling?

Hope somebody can shed a bit of light on the above for me

Tia,

Tony

My understanding is that with netMD, they were called groups.

With HiMD, they're called albums.

They're functionally equivalent is what I get out of it. I can't be absolutely sure though, as I never use netMD mode, and doubtless never will.

Why can't the artist's name be displayed? It can - just name the album something like "Joni Mitchell - Blue" rather than "Blue".

Thanks for both of your replies. If Group=Album, why have both on the Hi-md player? What's the point in, on at least one of the display options, of having the group name displayed, followed by the album name if they're both the same?

I realise that the artist's name can be displayed when playing, but not when searching thru the album list, or am I wrong?

Thanks again,

Tony

I wish nesting were possible, but it isn't unfortunately. I'm not sure that is available on iPod, either. The only thing yo could do on the Hi-MD is use the SubPMode, which lets you filter down by artist, album, etc. It's sort of like having a nested group, if only just for playing the disc.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree as a group != an album. Both groups and albums are collections of tracks but its possible for an album to cut across multiple groups.

in one line : where it says 'Album' on the disc, in sonicstage it says 'Source'. (but really means 'Album')

in more than one line : Looking at it another way, a group is a logical collection of tracks on the disc (this group contains tracks x,y,z) while each track has a note saying which album it belongs to (track x is from album q).

An exampe is a Little Birdy CD i've just dumped onto my NH900.. its in the group called "Big Big Love" and the source of all the tracks is "Big Big Love". If i head into sonicstage and create four new groups (fish, fowl, cubes, squares) and place random tracks in each i can now use the group seach/navi mode to navigate across each group while if i use the Album mode then theres still only one album - "Big Big Love".

If i was to then go and pick the singles off the CD and rewrite the source for these tracks as 'Big Big Love - Singles' but not touch the groups, my album lists now reflect two albums and the four groups.

Did that make any sense? Its 1:30 am here, blame lack of sleep on any lack of coherence smile.gif
