jeepcrazy
Hi all... I'd appreciate a hand here. I just bought a MZ-NH600D, and WinXP keeps seeing it as a USB Mass Storage Device and giving me errors. It won't load any of the drivers from the CD or from the updated driver files that came with the 2.2 update. It keeps telling me the selected file does not contain information about my hardware. I'm losing my mind here...where are the damn drivers for this thing? It knows it's a Hi-MD, because under "Location," it says Location 0 (Hi-MD) What's goin on? Thanks in advance for your help! Christopher
Welcome to the forums. Reinstall via the directions in the NetMD faq, please.
jeepcrazy
I've done that already, but thanks for the reply.
Christopher
Are you sure that the unit was unplugged the whole time and not plugged in until the program was started?
jeepcrazy
No, I'm re-doing it per your instructions again. The folks at Sony were *entirely* useless. That was fun. I'm very thankful these forums are here. Thank you very much!
Christopher
You're welcome, and I completely understand about the Sony comment you've made. But hey, I can't really complain - the more incompetent they are the more hits and new registrants I'm guarenteed to get.
jeepcrazy
I'm starting to hate Sony. It didn't work, again. It was unplugged the entire time, until after SS started (2.2) I plugged it in, it found new hardware for a second, then said "there was an error installing your hardware" I'm stuck. atrain
can you have a look at the himd in the device driver? you can often rollback/reinstall drivers through there,
jeepcrazy
Under device drivers, it's reported as a USB Mass Storage Device, which is the "digitally signed" driver that Microsoft reverted to when it couldn't find another one it deemed suitable, despite their presence. It can't roll back beyond that original driver. If I could get it to at least see that another driver was a possibility, it'd be a step forward, but every time I attempt to use one of those other drivers it says "the selected file does not contain information about your hardware." Christopher
atrain! Welcome to the forums, tech support partner in crime. I knew you'd convert to the darkside eventually. Anyway, jeep, are you using Service Pack 2?
jeepcrazy
Yep, SP2. I just tried it on another computer using regular ol' XP and it did the same thing.
jeepcrazy
Well, here's a twist. I just fired up my laptop (also running SP2) and just plugged it in... Fired right up. (No SS or anything else, just plugged it in....) ?! What the heck? Is this thing posessed?
Christopher
Wait a sec. Did you install the program only from connect.com on that other computer, open it and then plug in the unit?
jeepcrazy
Nope, just plugged the unit right in with no software installed whatsoever. HOWEVER I found the solution! The thing the other 2 computers had in common was that I was plugging the unit into a USB hub. The MD unit requires more power than that. While it's recognized, it won't actually "boot up," until you give it enough juice from the USB port. By removing a device that was on the root hub and placing the MD unit there, it fired up just fine. Add it to the FAQ!  Thanks for your help, folks! I'm sure I'll be needing more.
