smkranz Posted November 5, 2004 Report Share Posted November 5, 2004 Almost got an Otterbox 6010, until I came across the Quantaray aluminum carrying cases with customizable "pick & pluck" foam interior. Cost: $39.95 at Ritz Camera. It isn't waterproof, but I figure if I ever have to worry about it being submerged in 100 ft. of water, I'll probably have bigger problems at hand than saving the MD. Very nice setup... though certainly I would need a different configuration since I don't use my NH900 for field recording, just for listening to tunes... hmmm.. I suppose for my setup I would cut out a whole section to fill up w/ like 20 MD discs, then headphones, some gum sticks, battery charger and another hole for my Gameboy so I can jam & play at the same time. :laugh: Hey you guys from Maryland? Any chance that the metal case might cause some interference when running a line from a powered mic or preamp? I like to keep my Otterbox almost closed during shows (cuts down on the cigarette smoke smell too)and I would worry about that hard case on the wires. smkranz Posted December 29, 2004 Author Report Share Posted December 29, 2004 Yep, for my purposes, the larger Otterboxes looked nice but are overpriced. As it is, the Spousal Unit would probably have something interesting to say (if asked) about the $40 I paid for the Quantaray case. But seeing no reason to provoke her yet again, I haven't asked. I don't know if the Otterboxes have a second layer of pluckable foam underneath, but this one does. I am guessing that the second layer of pluckable foam is there so you could pluck out sections of both layers to accomodate larger pieces of equipment. The "customizable" interior dimensions of the medium Quantaray case are 8.5" x 11"..."customizable" because the first 1/2" or so of foam bordering the insert is solid (not pluck-able), to create a cushion against the wall of the case. Actual interior dimensions are about an inch longer each way. I haven't tried running a mic cord into the box to see if the metal causes any interference...maybe I'll try it out and post the results. I don't know about closing the case on the cord, because I think there is a little groove where the top and bottom of the case come together and the cord would pinch. This could be solved by filing a little notch just large enough to pass a cord through it, or maybe just leaving the side where the cord comes through unlatched, so it isn't pinched too hard by the case. Re: Maryland...I live in Westminster and work in Hunt Valley, but I do visit the Columbia area occasionally to feed two of my other hobbies, guns and homebrewing. [Even more off-topic, but if you fellow Marylanders are also fellow beer drinkers, Clay Pipe Brewing Co. in Westminster is producing a beer based on one of my homebrew recipes which won a recent competition, to celebrate our club's 10th anniv. It's a Pale Ale brewed with local honey. Brewing day is Jan. 15 and we'll hopefully be on store shelves by early Spring. We're still working on a name for the beer. tribalwind Posted January 14, 2005 Report Share Posted January 14, 2005 Cool, i have a similar case that i pulled out of the dumpster when i worked for Olympus camera(for all of 2 weeks!)actually i grabbed about 15 of them,they were made for high end cameras or video cams,all metal and super strong,these had a rubber gasket so it was watertight but i wouldnt scuba with it. sold em all on ebay years ago' though and just kept 1.this is giving me the idea to build a nice wood and/or bamboo case in my workshop,maybe with exotic hardwoods and some nice dovetails/fingerjoints and inlays.and sloped rounded edges,sorta like a surfboard rail..if it ever comes to fruition i'll post some pics Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
