obsideo
Browsing all around the forums in regard to live recording; there was a thread that made frequent mention about the poor mic preamp in the N707 (my old unit - and this explained to me quite clearly teh problems I'd been having with hi-volume recordings). Can anyone tell me if the preamp in the NH1 is any better/worse or has it changed at all? Cheers. note to A440: your radio shack earphone volume attenuator trick works like a CHARM! *thumbsup*
obsideo
Also (on a related note because I'm looking for the least possible hassle for high SPL recordings) has anyone used the PS-PSM-5 (lil Altoid box mic) from Sound Professionals? Found here http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/...d/item/SP-PSM-
A440
Glad the attenuator works for you. Sound Pros stuff is usually excellent, but I haven't used that particular gadget. Just looking at it, how you would use it during a concert? Hold it in your hand through the show? Leave it on a table or chair arm where it might get vibrated? Put it on the floor where the sound would get muffled? It seems like it might be perfect for a business meeting or recording your band rehearsals, but not for a gig. I think there's an advantage in having small clippable mics that you don't touch during the show, while the battery box is tucked in your pocket. Sound Pros is making them smaller and smaller. Separate mics can also give you more stereo separation, though I have a feeling the Altoids mics are oriented decently for that anyway. I hope someone else will answer your NH1 question, but I have to say that I didn't have overwhelming preamp noise from my MZ-N707 anyway. Once I beat the clipping problem, it was fine. obsideo
Yeah - I think you're probably right.. The novelty of it must have washed away my reasoning skills. Really, my ONLY problem with the N707 was the clipping problem at high volumes and your fix seems to have beat that for me too. I recorded a (quite loud) rehearsal last night but didn't bother to set the level manually - I've just become so used to it not sounding that great that I don't bother with it much... I wish I HAD bothered because it WOULD have sounded great. It sound mediocre as is but only because of the irritating, dynamic-killing auto-leveling that I didn't switch off. My NH1 hasn't arrived yet, but all of this movement forward in the medium (uploads, .wav conversion, etc.) has made me dust off the N707 while I wait for the new unit to arrive.. not that I'd stopped using it altogether but it certainly has seen it's time on my desk shelf. I'm still considering picking up the Auris ST and Boost box from reactive but would like an idea how MUCH better that 300 and change will make my hi-SPL recordings sound.. the headroom will be very significant?
