How much of a gap in recording whilst switching disks?

Hello. I am wondering how much of a gap in recording there would be when changing disks in a concert (with Hi-MD.) 10 seconds? I'm in the market for either an mp3 player or a minidisk and just want to get an idea. Thanks. Peter

The MD has to save the recording to the disc, just like you have to save a word-processing document after you've written it.

When you push the Stop button or the disc is filled, the MD takes some time to save the data to the disc--10-40 seconds in my very rough estimate, depending on how much you recorded. Then you have to remove the disc, pop in the new one and push the record button, which starts the new recording almost immediately.

If you have Hi-MD you definitely don't have to change that often. Especially if you record in Hi-SP. Even PCM gives you 94 minutes and I have found that to be adequate for all of my recordings. I have found that if you write a label in your blanks, you get a faster cycle when you switch MDs. In other words, prep your blanks with a disc title in the TOC and your recorder will "recognize" it faster. I always did that with standard MDs and I used mono SP back then for more time and less disc changes, etc.
