VFRgrl
Hi All! I'm looking to buy my little sister a MD player for Christmas. She leaves in a few months for the Peace Corp and I wanted a way she can take her music library with her- but not having to lug the 100+ CDs she has. I originally thought MP3 player like the big iPod- BUT it has a non-replaceable internal battery that must be recharged. She is going to Africa and may or may not have access to an electrical source, plus she would have to have a power converter. I started doing research into MD players and decided this is definitely the way to go for her, since from what I've found most run on standard, replaceable batteries. There are SO many options out there, I'm not really sure of the best way to go. Here are the criteria I find important: 1.) Must run on replaceable batteries (AA, AAA- etc) 2.) Must be reasonable durable- 3.) Price is not really THAT much of an issue as we were looking at the most expensive iPOD as an option (plus she is gone for 2 years so this is her present for the next 3 christmases  ) Thanks! Christopher
Welcome to the forums. What's your maximum budget?
Bananatree
NH600D sounds like a good ticket. You could get all her music in ATRAC format, on a few 1GB discs depending on quality. She could then switch out AA batteries at her fancy. I'd suggest making sure to only use the budled software called "Simple Burner" as that is the nicest way to get all your CDs on MD the fastest. VFRgrl
Hey All, thanks for the advice. Max budget is around $400.
thepootleflump
Yeah the MZ-NH600 is definately the way to go. It supports the new Hi-MD format with 1 GB discs and lots of music storage capacity. Also supports AA batteries which last ages. Finally it is pretty well made so should last the distance. With a budget of $400 you could get that and many discs.
Christopher
I'd recommend the NH900 from datavis.com, it's only $239 there [be sure to get latest price]. Better functionality and you still have alot of money left for discs.

etotheix
I have an NH900 and love it. But, I find the external AA case a bit awkward to use (though I'm very glad to have the option). Once you screw it on, it feels a little flimsy and it's surprizingly difficult to open when you want to change the battery. I'd worry that the case might break or get lost or something. Seems to me that an NHF800 would be a wonderful option for her: 1) It uses AA's internally (like the NH600). 2) It also has a radio tuner (might be nice to listen to some African radio). 3) It has a mic input (like the NH900). If she's joining the Peace Corps and going off to Africa, it might be really fun to take a mic along to record some of the sounds over there! VFRgrl
A big huge THANKS to everyone!!! I ordered her an NHF800 from datavis.com (thanks for THAT tip!) and it came yesterday. It is SO adorable I just want to keep it for myself! Too bad I don't have a decent home computer or I may be tempted to get one for myself. I can't wait for her to open it on Christmas so I can look at it out of the box. Thanks for all the recommendations and tips. Lori
mrsoul
Don't forget a good mic for her to use to record her experiences overseas. Check out this site for some good suggestions that would be easy to use with decent results. http://minidisco.com/single-point-stereo-mics.html Great job guys on the recommendations!
