campekenobi
I just got the NH900 in the mail today (u know, the one that costs like $250)... I thought I read SEVERAL reviews that stated it has an ALL METAL BODY. Well, only the FRONT of this silver one is metal, the back is plastic!! ???? stymie miasma
If it's any consolation, I think my NH900 is the same. In fact, I'm not entirely sure whether any of the external chasis is metal, especially when compared to my old Sharp MDMT99. Furthermore, the Sharp is much heavier than the Sony, making me think there is very little in the way of 'metal' in the NH900. Not to worry though. If all goes well, the NH900 will keep me happy until Sharp brings out a HiMD recorder/player. Failing that, I may just get the MZ-EH1 for on-the-go, and leave the NH900 for recording/downloading duties.
Christopher
I've never known the NH900 to have a metal back; it has always been known to have a plasticish back. Did you read any information on minidisc.org that stated otherwise? If so, please report the links here and I will be sure they are corrected. btw, the front is made of Aluminum. campekenobi
I don't remember exactly where I read that - most likely some review site or SHOP. However SERIOUS ISSUE here... I may be about to BAIL OUT of MD all together right now. I've never actually FELT a player before, and I'm scared I'm gonna BUST this thing! It feels so F R A G I L E - and has all these TEEENY-tiny buttons, etc... when the 1gb disc pops out I just see all those little mechanical parts inside that makes me nervous, and generally I can tell if I drop this sucker just once, it's toast. Whereas, the iPod mini (pardon the blasphemy) feels TOUGH, heavy metal, and very simple easy buttons. HELP !!!!! What do I do??????????? Return it for the iPod?? Christopher
You haven't even had it or used it for a full day and you're already questioning it? Why don't you try employing it first and then see what happens. Do you usually drop your electronics? Minidisc units are known for their robust strength and have the ability to be dropped a few times. I wouldn't recommend you go about doing such, but when I had my R700 it was no different, and the construction of that unit is almost exactly the same as the NH900. I dropped that unit many times and it never had any issues [hard asphalt, kitchen floor, etc]. Don't forget to get a higher capacity battery for longer battery life, by the by. p.s. Is this the way you usually act? Weeeirdo. :rasp:
campekenobi
a) you're right, I need to give it a fair trial yes, I usually act this way; if I get doubts about a product I receive I want to return it FAST coz I feel like I'll miss my chance of returning if I wait c) yes, I'm weird.
mrsoul
My old Sharp DR7 is made just like my NH900, metal front and hard plastic back. I put that recorder through some trials at shows, including recording at Smilefest for 3 days in a barn with a saw dust floor and it never gave me any problems. Just last week, my NH900 slipped out of my hand, hit the desk and chair and landed on the carpet. My 3 year old and I both just stood there in shock and awe. Well, it recorded just fine on Saturday night afterwards at the Umphrey's McGee show in Charleston. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6995 These things are pretty sturdy if you ask me but I still carry it around in a padded Otterbox just because I do still worry about taking care of it. I'm weird too.
campekenobi
Ok, well if anyone cares, I've already decided to KEEP my NH900  Based on hearing your confidence it the strength of the unit, and how I"ve now fallen in love w/ the little gizmo. And all that negative stuff I've heard about Sonic Stage, and I find it very intuitive actually (though I'm a heavy PC user kinda guy). My only major concern (and I believe I've heard this about the iPod too) is the output LEVEL to the headphones. I have this volume on MAX and I wanna go... "up to 11" if anyone knows what I mean. Other than going through my wav files and pre-boosting/compressing, is there ANY solution??? Like a pair of headphones w/ a built-in preamp perhaps??? (not big phones, of course). Or even a mini-preamp jack??
Christopher
What headphones are you using, mate?
campekenobi
well, first i tried the Sony cheapos that came with it (I know, bad idea), then I tried my nice studio ones (which usually need some boost anyway) (AKG 240s)... and I'm about to order those Shure M33s ones... I just love my music LOUD, and my Sony Sportsman (CD walkman) does it that way. (oh yeah - I tried the sony headsets that came w/ my CD walkman - the in-ear ones kinda -- anyway, they were a tad louder, but much less bass
me
My old Sharp DR7 is made just like my NH900, metal front and hard plastic back. The front and back of a DR7 is made of aluminium however the front is enamalled.

I wouldn't worry too much about fragility. My bargain basement 600d, which is constructed entirely of plastic, can take hits well. I dropped it while walking, about 4 feet, and it didn't even skip. The only damage were a couple of minor scuff marks on the plastic.
