datafreq
Hello: I posted here a few weeks ago regarding problems with Sonic Stage sw that came with my new 900, and was pointed to the online install which worked great... But a week later, I go to use my unit with my PC and Sonic Stage 2 will get right up to initialization and then I'll get the "omgjbox.exe encountered a problem" crash... I don't have that windows update patch installed and I have a clean PC that has both zone alarm and mcaffe installed but not loaded with startup Any ideas ? I'm thinking of taking the unit back and giving up on MD as it's been nothing but problems, considering I paid 400 bucks for it... Cheers Dave
campekenobi
Since I just went through this, I think I may know the problem, that is if you're using Windows XP. Fresh install or not, you have to run the security updates... I can't remember offhand which number update is required, but try updating all of them. (go to microsoft.com and run an auto-update). That actually fixed the probem for me, though I managed to narrow down the exact "hotfix" ID number that I needed (that's a security patch number you can read in control panel-->add/remove programs). datafreq
great i keep this PC off the net to keep it clean... i refuse to put service pack 2 on this pc... also, didn't one of these updates CAUSE one of the problems ??? campekenobi
note: I also refuse to get service pack 2. I didn't do that, like I said, it was merely a small security PATCH. If you want further help on this, either call Sony (they actually helped me) or if you can wait till tonight, I can tell you exactly what you may need). datafreq
i really appreciate the help on this sorry to be cranky, but this is becoming to be more of a problem than it's worth am i going to bring my cable modem upstairs to my "off the net" pc, reload zone alarm + mcaffee and update windows everytime this happens ? like i said i really appreciate your help on this and will wait patiently for your response this evening cheers dave note: I also refuse to get service pack 2. campekenobi
when you say "everytime this happens" I guess you're assuming that every time Windows has an update, if you don't run the update then the software will hang up? I certainly hope that's not the case - my guess is that you need the right security patch to initially start the software. UNLESS (and I wouldn't put this pass Sony to do this) every time you use Sonic Stage it secretly uses our net connections... I intentionally did not sign up to the "connect" program to get those "5 free downloads" for that very reason. But I certainly can understand your frustrations -- if you didn't see my post from just 2 days ago, you would have found me debating returning my new MD for an iPod and getting frustrated - however, I knew coming into this MD world that people hated the software... I stuck through the hour or so to get things straight, and I have no regrets, I love this lil' gizmo and I think it's worth it.
Christopher
Keep us informed on how it's going, and don't forget that if all else fails you can always try reinstalling via the directions in the NetMD faq.
datafreq
i've already reinstalled that way and still get the issue i just spent an hour on the phone / online chat with 3 different people, and one of the Sony reps insisted i MUST have hotfix KB840987 installed otherwise I shouldn't be getting the omgjbox.exe error... :wacky: i tried to explain to him that was the first thing i checked for after reading all the threads here... after 15 minutes of getting nowhere he transferred me to "second level" support, to a woman who was very knowledgeable and understood what i was talking about since the only thing that was different since the original install was that i was online, i am desperately hoping that you don't need to be online to use SS or I will have to return the 900...as i keep that PC off the net to have a virus free / trouble free computer... she couldn't tell me for sure whether SS need to be connected or not I am waiting for info from the Sony MD "Product Specialist" i will keep you updated... Keep us informed on how it's going, and don't forget that if all else fails you can always try reinstalling via the directions in the NetMD faq. campekenobi
ok... coz I think you also may need KB887811 installed as well. Let us all know what you find out about net connection, etc... I suppose I could just disconnect my cable modem & try the software... brb. Christopher
Another thing that may work is installing Sonicstage 1.5 and then doing the Sonicstage 2.# updater on top of it.
datafreq
well i uninstalled my mcaffee as well a bunch of other apps, grabbed the windows security workaround for the md issue from the site, and then uninstalled sonic stage 2 as per the "proper" was described here, then rebooted and reinstalled it and then rebooted and crossed my fingers i also did msconfig and shut down all apps like mcaffee zone alarm etc so that my system was back to it's original state...and voila... sonic stage now works perfectly...no issue whatsover, and i don't have to be online for it to work... thanks very much for everone's help   this board is a great resource... cheers dave

atrain
i know this is a little off topic but a pair of wifi pci cards could really save you a lot of trouble in the future. running an adhoc wireless network will allow you to keep updated without moving all the hardware around.
