justin_barbier
I know this has been gone over a lot, and most everyone says that the sound quality from taking lossy format (mp3) and compressing even further to "lossy" ATRAC sounds horrendous. Not having QUITE the definitive ear as an audiophile (per se), how would my 256-320kbps MP3s sound being transferred to hi-sp? Would it be acceptable? Thanks! atheodo
It depends how complex the music is. If we are talking about mostly vocals, you should be ok, if we are talking about new age; electronic music; you might have trouble. If you have the original CDs your best bet will be to reburn directly in Sonicstage. I know sounds like a lot of trouble, but it worths it trust me if you are after high fidelity. If you don't have the original CDs, then go ahead and convert a few with Sonicstage and do a comparison; if you are not satisfied; you can burn a CD and then import the tracks to SS from the CD in Hi-SP mode. I always use Hi-SP mode, because it has excellent fidelity.
justin_barbier
Well most of it is vintage rock... late 60's to mid 70's... stuff like Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath (nothing can help their signature dirty sound, lol) stuff like this... i ripped most of it from vinyl, which would be a pain to do again, since most of the albums are in storage... listening to the MP3 repros of the vinyl, I cant really hear much of a difference, but then again I'm WAY to young to really know what vinyl's supposed to sound like.. lol
Fat Tires
Just convert the MP3s and listen to them on your Hi-MD unit. If YOU are happy with how it sounds you'll be alright. Remember, it's your ears.

ROMBUSTERS
If you don't have the original CDs, then go ahead and convert a few with Sonicstage and do a comparison; if you are not satisfied; you can burn a CD and then import the tracks to SS from the CD in Hi-SP mode.burning MP3 encoded files to a CD just to rerip them to SS doesnt make sense. when you burn a cd from any compressed file it effectivly uncompresses it to wave form (i.e. a wav file) and then burns it as that is what CD players play. However this uncompressed wave form will still be missing the pieces the MP3 encoder dropped as it compressed it in the first place. Therefore dont waste your blank CDs burning them to get the same results plus transcoding them from your harddrive to your harddrive is much faster due to the fact that data can be taken form the HDD much much faster then it can from the CD. although again this doesnt really come into play due to the fact that the ATRAC encoding process is limited by how fast your processor that even a dcent CDROM drive should be more than enough to keep the data full. streaml1ne
Download Sonic Stage 2.3 and/or the MP3 Converter Utility. Import your MP3's and convert them. Then play them in SonicStage. You should get an idea of what it will sound like.

justin_barbier
In your situation the best thing to do would be to hook up the MD to your stereo and record the LPs via analog in This is actually what I ended up doing, to preserve the sound... my new himd came in and i recorded straight to pcm to see the sq, but i didn't hear much difference between straight pcm and hisp... im guessing b/c it's an album and it's analog... still, SUPER sq... thanks guys!
