Hi-MD compare to DAT

When using LinearPCM, the sound would be theoretical the same.

However, considering the price difference, a DAT will outperform current Hi-MD units.

Remember, more moolah means better components.

When we get professional Hi-MD-Decks, then of course Hi-MD will match any DAT recorder same price range.

And for comparison, a standard DAT is on playback equivalent to a CD-Player in the 600 to 800 $ class.

( I had two DTC-57ES and they were excellent. Only problem - the less than stellar durability of the tapes. )

A little bit, and only, if the source material was 48kHz from the beginning. But if you want to play it from a more reliable, cheaper medium, usually CD, then it means resampling down to 44.1kHz. And the resampling kills the advantage. In fact, recording directly to 44.1kHz sounds better than using 48kHz and a later resampling.

In addition.... sort of.... SonicStage is absoutly rubbish at resampling from 48khz to 44.1khz ... I have several radio shows (BlueJam .. ) in 48khz mp3 ... If I directly import these into Sonicstage at 66kbps ATRAC3, then the sound quality sounds much worse than if I convert to a 44.1khz wav via CoolEdit 2000 first... and then import these 44.1khz wavs into sonicstage at the same 66kbps ATRAC3 bitrate.
