Currently, I transfer CDs from my laptop to my minidisc via Sonic Stage or simple burner. Would the sound be THAT much better if I used optical out from my stereo? However, the difference is small, when using Hi-SP, but is audible on Hi-LP/LP2/LP4. If you have an old NetMD - recorder, then full quality is only possible via Optical In.
