Hi everyone, my first post! I've had my nh900 since 12-2-04, and it's been great, I used it to make a live recording of my daughters Christmas Choir program at her High School auditorium. I had been recording misc. stuff, experimenting with it since I got it, had a few CD's on it, real-time backups of old home recordings, etc etc, I decided to make a back up copy of the choir recording, "just incase.." you know, I did so, using cool edit, and the analog copy even sounded great...(this is a standard 80 min disc used in the HI-MD format) I was going along, adding track marks, so I could eventually upload only the music pieces, this was going well when all of a sudden the message came up...CANNOT RECORD OR PLAY.... I tried everything I could to get that disc back into normal mode, but it would not. I think it showed another screen immediately afterwards that said ... FILE UPLOAD? PRESS ENTER=YES STOP=NO..... well I was kind of freaking out at this point, I think I pressed the stop button, (I was in the denial stage I guess) hoping it would go away and return to normal, but...it went into a formatting routine it seems, and left me with a nice new blank disc  So just a report of a little glitch that happened to me, luckily there was nothing on the disc that wasn't in my computer already, and thank goodness I'd made the copy of the Xmas program, which I later edited with cool edit and turned into a CD, so there was no big loss other than a loss of confidence in my minidisc....I am thinking that maybe it had something to do with all the track marks I had been making, and not pressing stop to let it write to the TOC....??...anyway, I haven't had any problems with SS 2.2 but I'm still a bit hesitant to upload anything of importance, my advice to all is, after making a live recording, make a back-up anyway you like, just make one, before any other editing or uploading or whatever... Has anyone else had this error message yet?

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the info. I have NOT seen that message or had that problem on my NH900. I wonder if it was a bad sector on the 80 min MD? Help me understand, were you connected to Sonic Stage when this happened or just recording analog, etc?

Hi again, if I recall correctly, when that message came up, I was not connected to the computer, I was just editing in the machine itself, with only the remote and headphones attached. The 80 min. disc I was using was new when I began using i in my new HI-MD machine. Hi MD mode, I had recorded a CD via the optical input from a dvd player, and loaded in approx 40 songs digitally from my computer, all worked well, I had not dropped it , or bumped it. It has not happened since then, I am putting stuff back onto the disc and I'm going to try and get it to happen again, I'll let you know if it does.

Once again, I think the only thing out of the ordinary that I doing with it was adding track marks to the 45 minute long microphone recording I had made. I would say perhaps 35 track marks , and I had not stopped to let the TOC write, (didn't think about it)

I'll write more later, this is a great place here, I'm glad I found it,

bye for now

Good for you for backing things up.

What kind of blank MDs were you using? I've had problems (though not the one you describe) with Hi-Space and Memorex MDs, no problems with TDK, Sony or Maxell.

Also, is it possible your battery was running low? The unit senses when it is, and it writes a TOC before shutting down. Maybe there was some glitch there.

When I record concerts, I often put in track marks during the applause, and I've gone much higher than 35 without a TOC save. There should be room for hundreds of tracks, too. So I'm crossing my fingers that your problem was a bad MD blank.

Well....it's a Sony Premium blank, but that still doesn't mean that it ISN'T the disc. I guess in the back of my mind I was thinking that it was ok to make the track marks, and then let the TOC do its thing when I was done, that's why I wasn't thinking about occasionally hitting the stop button , and as for the power, I think I had the dry cell holder connected, so I don't think that was a concern either, well let's hope this was the only time that happens, and by the way, that error message is listed in the manual. they list two problems that could cause this message 1) There is no audio data that can be played on the recorder... and 2) The audo data or disc management file has been damaged. The suggested remedy they have listed is to " erase the whole disc or perform the Format function". oh JOY!

But I'm with you, I think the blank could be the weak link here. I recall a time when I was a camera repairman working in a photo store, people would bring in thier polaroid cameras because they werent' working, 9 times out of 10 a new film pack (which contains the battery) was all that was needed to get it working again. So maybe , as with the polaroid camera, maybe the blank I was using had a little flaw that got by the quality control people. anyway, thanks for the input, and for a great forum
