furst of all, great site, very imformative...managed to find quite a lot of stuff from it

when i was on the train the other day it bothered me that i didnt have anything portable with which i could listen to music -- i had a decent Sony Walkman, but that was either stolen or i lost it a little while ago, i forget which. So i started thinking of getting a minidisc

initially an mp3 player sprung to mind as they seem to be all the rage and i could store everything i have on there, but this Hi-MD is interesting. Also, i would like to be able to record with it -- not neccessarily with a microphone, but connect my player/recorder directly into a mixer so i could record the sets of my friends in clubs. Also, so i could record vinvyl at home (digitally?) for my own enjoyment.

i dont know, can you do this with an mp3 player? seems very doable with a minidisc player... so any suggestions as to what i should be looking at? also, would i be able to upload it to my computer via the usb? i hear with some of these players that's not possible

as for just plain listening to music, something like Hi-MD sounds great, because i dont really have a functioning stereo (atleast not with an optical out) and use my laptop mostly...so connecting it via USB to shift tracks quickly sounds good. I've heard that Sony has its own format for copy protection or something though? and that causes problems? is it a big deal? also, can i transfer mp3s that i just have lying around my computer, ones that i havent burnt off CD?

i live in the UK but i might be going to the US next week, so i'm thinking of picking one up there due to the weak dollar ( :rasp: ). would this cause any trouble? none of these players recharge via docking cradle do they? i spose i could just use an AA battery if so...

also, has america given up on the minidisc? looking at places like bestbuy, circuit city, they only seem to have 2 or 3 players each. always seemed like minidisc was more popular in europe with people i knew, but i havent really compared

happy new year!

Welcome. :welcome:

I believe that the flexibility with recording in the manner you describe would be very functional with Hi-MD and would probably yield better results in the pricerange.

ATRAC is not really a big deal once you get used to it, but please do not buy a Hi-MD unit yet. Wait until the second generation.

America isn't educated enough to understand the Minidisc, or Hi-MD. If they knew more, they'd probably enjoy it. That's why I'm here and why I work on the forum as much as I can. Nonetheless, I forsee Hi-MD having better success in the US than MD/LP ever did.

january eh? interesting...then i guess waiting would be good, if they appear on time (hmmm)...damn it! sad.gif

i'm sorta lookin at a NH-900. The NH-1 is incredibly sexy, but the lack of any AA battery use sort of puts me off.... the NH-900 doesnt appear that expensive for me; $250 compared to the £200 or £250 it would cost here

Why should one wait for the second generation? Or is the same reasoning as for cars -- never buy a model that only been on the market for 1 year.

I was almost ready to buy a NH-1, but now I'm wondering what the next generation might offer ... besides a higher price.

Nah. Sony doesn't even try to market it here anymore. The last, and only, MD commercial I ever saw on TV was in 1998, showcasing the R50. If SonicStage didn't suck so horribly...

... yeah, you know what I'm saying.

If Sony would learn to stop trying to "market" Hi-MD as a consumer listening format and shift their gears to marketing it as a prosumer recording product, they'd be a shoe-in for a niche that's not filled at all, really. Oh, and get rid of all the restrictions on the product and it'd actually sell. No one else is restricted like that. Oh, and raise the output from the pitiful 5mW. The creative labs muvo thumbdrive MP3 players have more than 5mW per channel. Sheesh, it's not that hard.

As for me, I'll be rockin' out to Aikawa Nanase or sundry other tunes on my iPod Mini, and fondly recall the days and the sound quality of my Sharp MD player. tongue.gif
