My Old Sony-v6's Are Worn Out

I have what is probably an old Sony MDR-V6 similar model from around 1984 that is beginning to be kind of worn out. This model is out of production since long gone. I have never been able to find a similar replacement that has the same frequency response and clarity as these. They reveal everything. Most headphones I've tried are either too unsensitive (mine had a sensitivity of over 112db if I dont remember wrong) or they are too high or too murky in the middle range.

Can anybody help with suggestions for replacements?

If you like midrange look at AKGs. K501s can be had off of eBay for around $130US and they have a lovely midrange. They are hard to drive however and require a decent headphone amp (PPA with bassboost makes these things SING).

The phones I use, beyerdynamic DT440s, are surprisingly good in the midrange (considering their predecessor's slightly recessed mids) and are very efficient; I've driven them off of MD players unamped before (which is saying something for their sensitivity). Check around, might be able to find a used pair for about $100US.

1) Give these guys a try, a Google search found that they may carry parts for MDR-CD6, though availbility is questionable (I personally don't think they have them, but they do list the part numbers, and that might be a good place to start, if you want to try your hand at reparing your CD6).

2) MDR-V6 or MDR-V7509 could very well be the replacement model for the CD6. The V6/V9 (7506/7509) are the current line of studio monitor phones and carries the same tacky "for DIGITAL" and has similar characteristics of revealing every detail and nuances of a recording.

For your reference, V6 specs:

Type: Circum Aural, Closed

Driver: 40mm Dynamic

Imp.: 63ohms @ 1kHz

Sensitivity: 106dB/mW

Rated Power; 500mW

Power Handling Capacity: 1W

Freq. Response: 5-30000Hz

I'd suspect that the CD6 has been since supplanted by the V6 and V7509.

I´ll give the V6's a try. I hope these new headphones are not that high in the middle frequency register as most headphones today are thats making them sound cheap and plastic.

Are the MDR-V700 an alternative if I cant find the V6's?

I was almost on the verge of removing the CD6 elements from the case and mounting them into a pair of new cheaper Sony's.

What I miss from most of todays headphones are their capability to capture even the anomalies of the sound of analog recording equipment. Also, most headphones seem to be not that sensitive to lower power sources as my CD6's were.

In this case get the 7509. B&H has them for ~$180. Click the email me a better price link: http://tinyurl.com/4gljl

At $180 they're a steal.

I've got both the 7506/V6 and 7509 and the extra price is well worth it to me. The 7509s are alot cleaner, far more sensitive and bring out detail better than even the 7506/V6 which are still a good phone.

Apparently as they are a US site they do not send to Sweden either.

Anyone know a site in europe carrying these headphones?

Meier Audio carries a number of premium and audiophile-grade headphones. Audiocubes also carries various Sony and Audio-Technica headphones. Personally I don't recommend the 7506 or 7509 because they are harsh; if you have 100 dollars US, get either Audio-Technica A500 or even Sony MDR-CD780 which are both good. Also, AKG K240S are very good for $100 US, and they are very light and comfortable.

Might as well toss a Grado SR-60 recommendation out there... they're the best el cheapo groovalizers I've ever heard, perhaps the best headphones for $60 US ever.
