Well, as the title says, im looking to get back into the live recording collection and im gearing up for a couple of new tours. Ive been out of the recording thing since 2001 so im not totally sure what is good and what isnt anymore. Im looking to get my hands onto a nice 1gig portable MD but im not sure if these guys cause any loss to the quality of the live recording. I sold my last deck and set of Core Sound mics which im totally kicking myself for doing so. Im going to buy the mics again and i need any reccomendations as to what type of rig i should by. Thanks a lot guys......

im looking to spend about $200-250 for a rig........

For recordnig purposes only, all of the models with both mic and line/optical in have basically the same components. I use the "bottom end" NH700.

As for loss of quality, everything I've experienced so far with the NH700 tells me that its preamp is better than any of the previous MD equipment I've used, as is its AGC [which is so decent as to actually be usable in many circumstances, I find]. You can record in PCM [uncompressed] mode, as well as the new HiSP and HiLP modes. If needs be, you can put an MD80 in the unit, switch it to netMD mode, and record in SP.

Wander around the HiMD forum and check the FAQ on http://www.minidisc.org .. I am in the process of rather slowly updating it.

Hi dex otaku, your means is that the record function of nh700 is better than any other md ?include better than nh900 and nh1 ? in other words,700 is the best choice to recording? Am i right? Thanks for lot:)

Put a couple more checks next to the NH700 I own one and a friend of mine owns one.

It's kind of like the benchmark for HiMD recorders.

It'll give you everything you need and all models above it simple give you minor features that mean nothing as far as performance goes.

I'd say the NH700 is probably the best bang for your buck.

Read carefully:

"its preamp is better than any of the previous MD equipment I've used, as is its AGC."

To rephrase:

Its mic preamp is better than that of any MD [not HiMD, since they have the same preamp is this one] I've used, as is its AGC.

Notice that I made no mention in either case of it being better than the NH900 or NH1 [which should be exactly equivalents to the NH700 in this department].
