Daveace Posted February 21, 2005 Report Share Posted February 21, 2005 Hi all,I'm no newbie when it comes to live recording, as I've had several, successful boots made by myself in the past. In terms of sound quality, I have my own thing down pat, with the Sony MZ-NF810CK MD recorder and the Sony ECM-717 mic, but unfortunately, some of my final products have been marred by clipped songs due to disc changes which begs the question, is it safe to record live shows in LP2 mode? Does the sound quality not match up to that of SP? A440 Posted February 21, 2005 Report Share Posted February 21, 2005 I've recorded concerts in LP2 when I thought disc changing would be impractical. They are quite listenable (unlike LP4, which isn't), but there is a slight dropoff from SP quality, less definition. If you're going to one that's not ultra precious, I suggest just trying it and see if it's tolerable to you--or go check out the local bar band and see what you think of an LP2 recording. Some bootleggers would turn up their noses at the thought of anything but SP, so it's really your own taste that's going to have to decide this one. I mean, if its just an actual quality issue, I can always touch anyting up in Cool Edit, but if its like an actual frequency issue, you know... mrsoul Posted February 21, 2005 Report Share Posted February 21, 2005 I know this gets some flack here but try recording in SP mono BEFORE you record in LP2. I have used both LP2 and SP mono for shows I didn't want disc changes problems. It is my belief that SP mono does sound better for some shows than LP2. dex Otaku Posted February 21, 2005 Report Share Posted February 21, 2005 Recording mono on LP2 = using the full bitrate for the single channel, as it's a joint stereo [M/S] encoding format. If mono is appropriate for your recording, LP2 won't sacrifice too much. For stereo recording, LP2 is decent but I wouldn't use it for the 1st generation of something that you know will be edited and likely re-encoded with another lossy codec. Daveace Posted February 21, 2005 Author Report Share Posted February 21, 2005 Hmm, well, yes, when I upload my live recordings to be put onto CD, I upload them to Cool Edit Pro and EQ them and boost the volume or whatever to get the sound I desire. I guess LP2 is not good for that then. Well, if mono has no loss of kbps, I will just use that when I don't want to change discs. 'Cause I can always produce a stereo-like sound in Cool Edit.
