where in the manual, it did state "it is recommended that you use AC power adaptor for long recordings"

the Hi-MD state to have a mechanism to count for if there's enough power for ur recording,

but, it just ain't be 100% correct and I do think it can't estimate how long u will record for

as the recording of Hi-MD/MD need quite a lot of power

so pay attention when u r gonna do a long time recording(say 45 mins or longer)

or ur recording would be gone

[added]

may be I should post all I found about this topic

just turn to page about playback time and recording time for rechargeable battery and AA battery in ur manual

and do a comparison

then u will find a substantial drop of AA recording time as compared with its playback time

________________ Rechargeable Battery____AA battery

playback(linear PCM)_______ 5_____________ 10

record(linear PCM)_________ 3.5_____________ 2.5

the reason for the substantial drop would be during recording the unit take up a higher voltage

and I can forcast if in the recording mode and the power is low(or consider to be unstable), certain function of the unit shall be in question

just saw a user here mention this morning about recording for about 1 hour then found his unit no response

this could be the reason

I do think Sony should be more preciously on this, mostly recommend more on user when they are recording in Hi-MD

edited at latest time :

correct wrong figure from minidisc.org to figure shown in the Sony manual

Page 24 of the 600 manual. Its in the second column the first comment under notes.

Also on the back of my 600 it has a sticker on it saying that if you wish to edit or record on a 1Gb disc you should use the AC adaptor as the product consumes a lot of power.

I always use the AC adaptor I have when doing my recordings even though they are usually only about 30 minuites.

The best recording unit (powerwise) seems to be tied between NH900 and NH1. NH1, in particular, can achieve the same recording time as NH900 with its default 900mW gumstick and one alkaline AA (somewhere around 6 to 10 hours in HiSP, this from my memory). If stealth recording is priority, then definately go with NH1, less bulk involved.

Units will also not do any sort of writing operation (erasing tracks, moving tracks, recording) if the battery gauge shows 50% of power or less, and will say not enough power.

For recording, the times given in manual for NH900 (AA and Gumstick) and NH1 is close to one another:

All figures are lifted off of the Manual. NH900 assumes the 900mW gumstick and AA Alkaline pack, NH1 assumes a full charge (3 or 4 hours rather than the standard 80% top off). All recording times are continuous.

Recording on 1GB.

         PCM     HISP     HILP
NH-1      6        8.5        9.5
NH900     6        8.5        10
Recording on Normal MD in HiMD mode
PCM     HISP     HILP
NH-1      5        8        9
NH900     8        12       14
Recording on normal MD

           SP       LP     LP4
NH-1       8        10     10.5
NH900      12.5     15     17
As you can see, if you use 1GB blanks, you get no power advantages when recording. However, with normal MDs, you see extra benefits of the AA Pack. However, given the limited space on a MD formatted for HiMD (300MB), the power gained seems somewhat... questionable.

But having AA pack ensures that you'll have enough juice to record...

Damage, circuit on different unit shall be different

u just can't compare 2 different model with their power usage

[added]

and they use different rechargeable battery

NH900 use NiCD(right?)

NH1 use Lithium

totally different cool.gif

In case this is referring to my thread about my NH1 locking up a couple days ago, I just wanted to clarify I did indeed have the AC adapter plugged in. So that wasn't the issue.

it can be

ur description is likely the same as the situation when unit frozen due to instable power supply

that's why I thought power supply in the first place cool.gif

so next u encounter this problem again, just let it record until the end

(if it is recording but just no response, then it will stop recording automatically)

u can try listen if there is little noise from the unit

if yes, then the unit should be recording

well for the worst case, if u knows it's recording(or u can feel it's moving) but it just won't stop

then u may have to cut off the power

a replacement should be asked with Sony

coz this is surely their fault on design
