Mr Sim
are mp3's really any good.Is there any logic as to why the world is using them or is this just another advent of mass consumer stupidiy caused by software companies being too lazy to take the time too to find something better for music playback. From what I've been able to gather from reading various forums is that Mp3's are simply the audio component of mpeg movies. other than the fact that Mp3 is the most widely used format does it really have any pros over other compression formats. assume I'm talking about a balance of quality Vs. file size
Bananatree
In some cases yes, mp3 isn't tops in all areas. However because of it's widely known base, and it's fidelity when encoded properly, mp3 is doing very well right now.
Guest NRen2k5
I can tell you why I use MP3. I can't speak for anybody or everybody else, obviously.1) The sound quality, although not great like Musepack or ATRAC3plus, is still pretty darn good, especially considering MP3's age. A properly encoded 128kbps MP3 will exhibit less distortion than a 132kbps ATRAC3 file.2) *Everything* supports MP3. Hardware and software - MP3 players, DVD players, cell-phones, CD players... heck, even SonicStage supports MP3. 3) Everybody these days knows what an MP3 is and has something that can play them.4) Flexibility. MP3 has 5 mono/stereo modes which can be used interchangeably, several different possible sampling rates, and many different possible bitrates.5) You can normalize them. Thanks to a piece of software calle MP3Gain, you can very easily and effectively change the volume of your MP3 files.
Guest tony wong
I do think the most important reason is :the 1st gen of mp3 player is flash basedit's shocking resistant and very smaller in sizethat's why people turn to mp3 player, just because it's smaller than MD
