Big Problems

Okay, i've read through the threads and found a similar problem to mine, but the solutions didn't work, and my problem is even bigger so here goes...

I downloaded the Sony MP3 conversion tool, and when i convert the songs and play them in Sonicstage, they are distorted with blips and such in the background and they speed up. Then, when i transfer the songs to the minidisc, they come up as only being 0:01 long, they play nothing for that time and then it moves on to the next song.

Before i had this compound problem my problem was just the mp3s were fine in sonicstage, but once it converted them and sent them to the player, they got distorted.

I have a couple things i know are causing problems, i hadn't had this problem before i installed FFdShow, but i needed to install it because i couldnt hear some of my tv episodes. I tried just uninstalling this and that didnt help, i tried disabling the mp3 decoding hoping that it was just a conflict with another codec, that didn't work.

I've also got the LAME codec installed, but then also have FFdshow like i said. I'm pretty noob with the mp3 codecs because i never had a problem before.

My system, Althon xp 2500, 512mb, 180Gb (120, 60), sp 1, i'd rather not install sp2 because i hate the no firewall and no antivirus alerts, but if i have to i will.

Hopefully you can help, but it would also help if i knew of maybe just 1 codec pack that would do it all, i've had Nimo and a couple others, but i still had problems where i couldn't hear the mp3 soundtrack in videos.

PLEASE help, thanks.

Welcome.

Download Service Pack 2; you can kill the reminder messages that ask you about the firewall and anti-virus - it's quite easy.

What version of Sonicstage are you using? Have you tried Marcnet's Hi-MD renderer?

I'm using the newest Sonicstage, i thought that was the prob so i updated to 2.3, i've never even heard of this Marcnet thing.

So you have problems with mp3 files that you have converted to ATRAC3Plus correct? Not with files that you have recorded in your HiMD unit and transfered to pc?

I have one of the older players, the MZ-N420D.

Hopefully, this clears up any confusion, i've got songs already on the disc, they are fine, but the last times i've tried to transfer these issues have come up. Alternatively i tried the Sony MP3 conversion tool, and then when playing the converted songs from "My Library" they had the distortion. So its clear to me the problem comes during conversion. As far as the songs not registering the time properly, i think that could be fixed once this is fixed.

Mp3 Conversion Tool only converts to Atrac3Plus (someone correct if this is no longer true), which is incompatible with your NetMD unit.

Also NetMD does not allow to transfer songs from the unit back to pc.

I still don't get why you get a distortion when converting mp3's to atrac3plus though.

Does that make sense?

I know i can't transfer from the MD to the PC, i'm not trying to. It's somewhere in conversion, my geuss is with codec issues, but i don't know.

Can someone that watches lots of different movies and tv eps tell me the codecs they use?

If you're looking for a video player with good codec support, I tend to switch between WiMP classic and VideoLAN Client.

I tend to use VLC for everything but DVDs.

WiMP classic generally uses its own codecs unless you tell it not to. There's a panel in its preferences for disabling its codecs, which will then drop the job to your system codecs.

If you're using FFDshow, make sure it's the newest version [or close to it]. I've been using v.2005-02-01 and found that it does not interfere with SonicStage at all, even when I try to force it to do so.

FFDshow has a control panel that lets you disable its support for decoding different formats, too. It should be in a folder under your start button, under "Audio filter configuration". From there you can disable MP3 support to see if that's part of your problem.

The LAME ACM codec is, to my knowledge, meant only for encoding audio, not decoding it. I believe it has an option to enable decoding, but they warn that it should be left off. Perhaps this has changed since I last looked.
