Ss3 & Ol' Good Db Problem

Hi guys

I had the "updating database" problem on SS 2.3 and previous versions startup...

I installed ss3 doing a complete uninstall, and following the FAQ directions.

But it's still there.

Am I doing something wrong or is my pc damned for eternity? blink.gif

Anyone solved that issue with ss3?

I've never encountered the issue in the first place [from SS 2.1 -> 2.2 -> 2.3 -> 3.0].

The usual questions, then:

Obviously, SS v3.0,

but what version of windows and what servicepack level are you running? The last I knew, SS database issues were still most likely caused by windows components [such at the jet database] needing to be updated.

Yes, you can fill out the specs in the rules: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8027

Well, I read through all of it...

I own a MZ-nh900.

I quote myself (from another topic)

>> On my home-installed Windows XP PRO SP2 machine I get the "Updating database" error, and nothing more (Obviously, I tried all the install/uninstall/registry fixes I found on this forum).

The funny thing is Sonicstage, installed from original CD and updated through the web installer, works flawlessly on my brother's "almost clean" XP HOME laptop WITHOUT SP2.

And, even funnier, SS worked on my machine a couple of months ago when I first got an Hi-Md, a MZ-NH700.<<

My system runs XP SP2 regularly updated

It's an Intel PIII-S 1400Mhz

ASUS Cusl2-c m/b

512mb KINGSTON PC133 SDRAM

Matrox g550 32mb ddr d/h video

SB Live! Value audio

VIA USB 2.0 PCI adapter

ATI Dv wonder IEEE1394 PCI adapter

Maxtor Diamondmax ata133 60gb hd

IBM Deskstar ata100 40gb hd

NEC DVD player

TEAC CD burner

PIONEER 108 DVD burner

Correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't the "jet database" component error been fixed with SP2 (which is installed on my system)?

And, moreover, I have to add that Simple Burner works OK, file transfer to hi-md works OK. Only SS is causing trouble with my system.

I think it's a software related problem, but I don't have codec packs installed. I'm just using the ReClock filter to play some movies, but it's not currently set as the preferred DX renderer.

I use Nero (6.3) as burning software; Nod32 as anti-virus software.

Well, up to you.

And thanks a lot...

Well, thanks

for your prompt and helpful replies...

I'm impressed.

I thought it depended on the fact I didn't put my pc spec in my post, but well, now they're there and I see no crowd.

What about a simple, clear "Uh, I don't know, ss sucks..." If you have nothing better to say?

Thank you gentlemen. dry.gif

Well, I have to say that I'm also experiencing the same issue with SS 3.0 - I did the whole rigaramole as detailed in the FAQ - uninstalling SS 2.3, OpenMG modules and add-ons, restarting each time, removing all Sony/OpenMG-related directories, purging all Sony/OpenMG registry databse keys etc.

Yet the same error:

Cannot find the databse file, or the databse file is corrupted. Click OK to recover the databse. Click Cancel to exit the program.

I don't get it - can Sony's software engineer's really be all that bad? This isn't simply just buggy software...this is software so badly coded it's literally a joke....

Also - I'm sure everyone on these forums means well, and they really are trying their best to help out, but does anybody have *any* idea whatsover about the real reason for this "Cannot find the databse file" error? What exactly is the root cause of this problem. After searching through 30 posts on the subjects, most seem to end with the generic response 1. It's your fault, 2. Replace your computer, and 3. Try reinstalling SS.

Apart from reinstalling SS, applying service packs, and checking for codec packs, there doesn't seem to be any other solution that has ever been suggested. Is this a fundamental problem with SS?

On a brighter note - does anybody know of any open-source projects to reverse-engineer the HiMD protocol, or create a GPL app to transfer music? I know the libnetmd people were trying something, but the project seems fairly dead in the water as of late wink.gif.

SS database (MtData.mdb) should be there :

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sony Corporation\SonicStage\Packages

but SS should create an empty database if absent.

I think there is really an installation problem for Jet Database with SP2 ( I have seen elsewhere that there is a problem also when upgrading Directx 9 if SP2 is installed).

The database IS there, for me, and if i delete it SS DOES CREATE a new db, but it always comes up saying that it needs update, it creates a new one and then shuts down.

Bad!

one solution is to install Windows on another partition and boot on it for working with SS.

Programs like PartitionMagic could facilitate the installation process.

This is a joke, I hope.

How many Windows partitions should I have if all software was like this?

I know EVERY piece of software would work almost flawlessly on a "CLEAN" install of the OS, but who's running such systems nowadays?

I don't know. But I'm leaving now.

I must reboot, because I want to play minesweep.

For daws, for example, this solution can be easier than tweaking everything possible or setting a special account.

For SS, I mean that it could be interesting to know until when it works , starting with a fresh install of Windows XP and SS3 only on a separate partition, then gradually applying service packs and patchs.

Some volunteers ?
