Fat Tires
Sony Ericsson is realeasing their new mobile phone the W800 Walkman phone and it looks great. A disturbing thing to any longtime MD user is that the phone won't support ATRAC3Plus. It will only playback MP3 or non-DRM AAC files (yes, iTunes support).Sony may add support for ATRAC3Plus so Connect.com customers can take advantage of the phone too, but they seem to be treating Sonicstage users poorly in my opinion.LINK
atrain
it's not really sony though, its 'strategic partners' sony ericsson. it is odd that the phone is being branded as a 'walkman' though - essentially that is sony electronics connect conection, if you will.would anyone here go out of their way to purchase one? i've been a ericsson fanboy since way, way back '95-6 i think but this doesn't appeal to me. Christopher
Nah, I was an Ericsson fan boy as well, but after sampling Motorola's somewhat higher-end offerings I'm an official convert. Who knows about Sonicstage though? Perhaps they'll adjust some things and make it play nice, and make AAC support a little more comfortable for the rest of us.It really doesn't make sense that they've dropped ATRAC support, considering it's one of the friendliest hardware codecs [i.e. battery life] around. Damage
I'm at a point where I'm ready to swear off motorolas for good. However, after using the Sidekick, I don't know if any other phones would satisfy me (the sidekick is DOA, screen is cracked to heck, and I'm too cheap to get the new Sidekick II). But the phone is essentially an Ericsson product, Sony got out of making cell phones awhile back, IIRC. We used to have Sony cellphone back in the day with a jog wheel. Ah, those were the days. Christopher
I was never really impressed with the Sidekick II, even after playing with one extensively. Plus, data plans in the United States are atrocious compared to 3G/etc in Asia. We're so far behind that it's almost moot to have a data phone here.
