Can The Mz-r900 Play/recognize Mdlp Groups?

hi i last posted in this community in 2002. that was when my mz-r900 died on me after being dropped one too many times.

i finally got the money to have it fixed, so now i've been using it again.

i'm planning to get a net md recorder in the near future. i know that the mz-r900 doesn't support sorting into groups the stuff that you have recorded into it via MDLP. however i'm wondering if i buy a recorder that supports grouping (well, they all do, after the r900) and if i sort my mdlp tracks into groups, will my mz-r900 be able to recognize the tracks? will it be able to play them?

--------

my other question is, what kind of usb cable do net mds use? there's a used n707 i'm keen on, the thing is, the owner's lost the usb cable already. i'm wondering if the cable is something proprietary/ exotic from sony that's super hard to find, or the typical usb cables that one can find in ordinary computer stores? (actually i already have a bunch lying around, for my external hard drive, digital camera, mp3 player etc.. if the usb cable is something typical then i'm in luck!)

thanks.

Ok. Your R900 will still be able to play all the tracks - it will just not recognise the groups.

The group information is actually stored in the title of the disc, and on a non-group unit will appear something like this:

0;Disc Title//1-7;Group One Title//8-15;Group Two Title//

This is just an example. The name of the disc is "Disc Title". The first group on the disc encompasses tracks 1-7 and is called "Group One Title". The second group, called "Group Two Title" contains tracks 8-15.

So you CAN actually edit/assign the group information on your MZ-R900 by editing the title of the disc. If you make a mistake however, the groups will not be recognised.

Group-MD units will ignore this code at in the title, and recognise the individual groups.

As for the NetMDs, the majority of the use a USB to USB-mini connector. It's similar to what many Palm and pocket-PC devices use I'm told. Shouldn't be hard to track down.

Hope that helps.

In case you change your mind about the model, the USB connection for the MZ-N10 is ridiculously proprietary.

really? haha. i was planning to buy an N10. but i didn't want to get stuck when its built in lithium ion battery dies out. that's the main reason i don't want to get an iPod.

now that you've told me about its proprietary usb cable, that's another con dissuading me from buying the N10. i always lose things and i'm gonna be dead if i lose that cable.

anyway i already ordered an N910. hehehe..

thanks for the info!

The 910 is a fantastic unit - I'm sure you will enjoy it for years to come.

Now I'm jealous. spiteful.gif

just to make sure we're talking about the same thing.. i'm referring to the *old* (well, from a couple of years back) net md mdlp unit mz-n10. not the newfangled hi-md 910s..

but yeah, i'm sure it's a good unit.
