Does your NW-HD5 play slow?

Hi everyone,

I would like to know if it's just my device (so I can exchange it) or whether it's an NW-HD5 problem: mine plays back about 1 second slower per minute than the playing time displayed, no matter whether mp3 or atrac format. (This is annoying because I need to play in sync with DVD movies.) I would much appreciate it if some of you could test yours and report back!

Have u checked weather the files ure trying to play are VBR(Varibale Bit Rate MP3) or a stable 128, 160, 192 etc... SOmetime smy winamp does that when i play VBR files that are badly encoded. If it plays normal music files like atracs encoded from CD's then YES! take it back ASAP!!

Yes I would say the same thing. Sounds like VBR, since it will usually mess with timing by a little less than 1 second at times. Although re-reading your post you mentioned that it does this with ATRAC--but make sure you aren't re-enc. a bad enc. to begin with.

best idea would be to rip straight from CD to ATRAC and try with that.

Thanks for the tips. I am ripping sound tracks from movies using DVD Audio Extractor, which I think does a good job. On two other (cheaper) players the MP3 files ripped by the same program with the default settings played in sync just fine! I tried CBR and sample rate 4410 Hz for the NW-HD5 but it didn't help.

The output formats offered by the ripping software are: OGG, MP3, WAV, Direct Stream Demux, CD image and cuesheet. I've only tried MP3, and transferred the files to the player directly (with FileManager) and through SonicStage, with and without ATRAC conversion. None of this solved the delay problem. What's going on here?

Allow me. Go to www.clonedvd.com, or if thats not the correct url, search for it and download it. Rip the cd to your computer, then burn it to a dvd or even a cd-r. The sound doesnt get compresses or spoilt. Just record that from a coaxial or optical out and you are all set. This doesnt really suit you, but you could always, record via audio input on your computer. Or just rip the cd you burnt back to your computer with another program that separates the audio and video.

if it was working with other players, but not with your HD5, maybe you've got a defective HD5.
