Question

I think sony r cheating by making false claims on the box that they r giving 512mb for NW-E505 but when u see in windows explorer there is only 487mb{(remmember it no where written on the box that u r going to have less memory & as i have already mentioned that they carefully put about memory on the back of the box in Hard disk based players(nw-hd3 & nw-hd5))} that u can use.As after making lot of calls & sending so many e-mails(After eating their haed literally) to sony they told me the following

1MB OF SONY PLAYER IS EQUAL TO 1000KB THAT OF WINDOWS IS 1MB IS EQUAL TO 1024KB they told me b`coz that the memory showed in the windows is less. But the point is that they should tell us about all this before buying b`coz after buying i tought i was cheated.

Therefore i think its an important question to be asked in forum

Note -i know that some memory is utilised by player for its table of contents but not that much is used for that.

As there r many other players in the market but without that cheating factor.

:ol_rolleyes: No man, Sony arent 'cheating' us. That measurement of data is commercial standard. It is a given that people assume 1000mb is equal to 1 gig. So they just go with the flow, their product looks better, and they make more money. My "160" gig external hard disk is only 158 gigs, not the full 160. My nw-hd5 has 18.5 gigs, and my lap tops "30 gig" hard disk is only really 28 or so.

This measurement technique is industry standard. Nobody reports the windows size, just the theoretical size. So no, Sony isn't cheating us anymore than any other company with products dealing in capacities.

Yea i just got an e507 and it says on the back in small print "user available memory - 1,022,066,688 bytes , a portion of which is used for data management functions" so they did tell you how much space there really is, u just gotta read the descriptions on the back.

Thanks though but sony has already put lot of stickers on the back of my E505 box .Soo its hard to see anything..
