Copyright Issues Sony VS iPod

My friend recently sent me a link to a very interesting article regarding copyright music from CD's you buy.

it seems that if you own an ipod the only LEAGAL source of music for it is the iTuns store. So if you have a CD, that you paid for, and you rip it to your iPod, you ar epbreaching the law!

what i want to know is where the sony devices stand? The main point of sonicstage seems to be able to rip a cd into atrac and onto your Sony device, be-it NET-MD, HDD etc..

if anyoen would like to clarify this??

I Don't know how how legal around the globe is ripping of your own CDs to the computer. But in EU area it's now against the EU-copyright law that was launched month ago... So then France launched law that to sell any kind of copy protected material is forbidden.

What makes sony's system legal, in my mind at least, is that you dont have the OPTION to give your atrac or mp3 fles ripped through sonic stage to someone else, they wont work. With the new s.s 3.3 asking if you want to add copyright protection to your music, maybe it isnt so legal anymore. I always got the impression that only if you uploaded your music to the internet, or copied it for someone else it was illegal? The person who uploads the music should be the one who gets prosecuted. The thing is, the day the record labels persecute every person who has lent or borrowed a cd, copied one, downloaded, Will be the day the music industry dies. I have bought 5 cd's in the past two months, not because i couldnt have just as easily downloaded it from the internet, or because i was afraid of being caught if i did do it, but simply because i wanted to have the original on a cd with the album art. I also bought an album on sony;s connect. It can be cheaper, but the problem is, that even if they charge £0.89 or £0.99 per song, for a few pounds extra it just makes more sense to buy the original hard copy, instead of having to worry about whether your files you downloaded will stil work on your computer, if it crashes. This has happened to me before, and no, they dont play back. After sending like 10 emails, i finally got them to give me some purchase codes, to get my tracks back. And no, dont bother doing this if you have never even bought tracks off connect, they actually know what songs you have purchases, you have a sort of file. My point? Download the music if you plan to buy the original. I dont see any problem with trying before buying. If i download a track, and i see that its shit, i will be glad i didnt buy the album, and will have saved MY time and MY money in the process. I am probably putting myself up for scrutiny, but this is just where i stand at present.

Thats what i thought, but one of my friends reminded me:

it is ileagal to make ANY coppies of copyrighted material(such as music on a CD)

so the moment you do anything but listen to the music, you are beraching copyright, in so far as the above statement has it!

Who care all these things in Especially India whether it is music or moviesetc.As i know from a report that 70 percent of the people listen to illegal music in India.Just listen to the music and enjoy.

i always thought that as long as you weren't reselling your copies that it was ok, otherwise even recording cds to tapes back in the 90's as illegal.

I know that in Canada I am allowed to copy my own CD's for my own personal use. This quote is from a Government website.

Before the Copyright Act was amended in 1998, copying any sound recording for almost any purpose infringed copyright, although, in practice, the prohibition was largely unenforceable. The amendment to the Act legalized private copying of sound recordings of musical works onto audio recording media - i.e., the copying of pre-recorded music for the private use of the person who makes the copy. In addition, the amendment made provision for the imposition of a levy on blank audio recording media to compensate authors, performers and makers who own copyright in eligible sound recordings being copied for private use.

This does make MD's a little more expensive though.
