To save wear on my precious MZ-NHF800 I recently picked up a MZ-NH600D cheap on eBay for use as a player. On a whim, I put a live recording I wanted to upload in the MZ-NH600D and connected the USB, and SS 3.0 uploaded the tracks just as it does on the NHF-800.

Amazing that Sony actually left something un-crippled.

I like to use the NH600D, simply because I don't demand all the feature from a higher model. I think that Sony not only left it uncrippled, simply because of the $$ factor, but also because it is what we wanted on ALL MD players. Allowing back and forth traffic (although there are roadbumps) allows us to use the player as more then a cheap alternative to either the iPod or a Flash player, but a solid way to manage your music, and a great way to listen to it.

Not really. It would have cost more money to cripple it than to leave it the same as the other models.

It seems changing a few lines of code isn't much, considering the money they would be making forcing people to upgrade to a higher model. When you think about it, it seems it was left as to not have the world at protest. (The MD world anyways)

I don't think it would've been too difficult or costly to remove uploading capabilities - just a few things in the firmware you'd have to adjust.

It's cool that it works though, sounds like a solid device for dedicated computer use - less of the hit on your better unit's recording lens.
