ghostdog
I recently got an MZ RH10 delivered to me in Ireland from ebay (from Japan). The unit was going fine until I found problems inserting my old maxell minidiscs (of which I have a few hundred). They required a bit of a push to get in. Well maybe I pushed one in a bit too much as now its stuck and I cant get the bloody thing out and my $300, one week old unit is now useless. I tried to open the unit but cant seem to get all the screws out and pulling the disc with tweezers doesnt help either. Looks like the warranty is only valid in Japan. Needless to say I am very pissed off....If anyone has any suggestions theyd be much appreciated
Tiesto
I read somewhere that the maxell's shutters are plastic so the problem couldn't be the player itself but the discs "of which you have a few hundred", if you haven't pulled it out yet then I suggest you the obvious: a local Sony tech service
ghostdog
yes but i think it is a problem using european maxell disks with japanese rh10s. the maxells worked fine in my other earlier model (until it got stolen).local sony tech services are non existent in limerick, if i knew how to disassemble the unit id do it myself but I can only get a few screws out. cant seem to find a service manual online anywhere either. Berg
I just got my rh10 from audiocubes (very happy and satisfied so far), and while reading this I realised that I had a maxell md in the device...starting to sweat, I opened my rh10...the disc popped out smoothly.Doesn't mean anything, I guess I will be avoiding plastic-covered md's from now on?Hope that you got the disc out, ghostdog!Sietse-Jan
jadeclaw
I don't know, what Kurisu had written privately, but I'm wondering about Maxells with plastic shutter.I did had problems with Memorex MDs (my pet peeve ), they got stuck more than once in the home decks I had, until I bend back the shutters on all of them. The included labels sometimes come off at a corner, making sure, the disc gets stuck again.By the way, it is advisable, not to put MDs into the back pockets of your trousers, metal shutters bend quickly out of shape that way.Plastic shutters are usually less problematic, as they keep the shape much better. D-EJ915
I've heard of guy's who have had nightmares with metal shutters too, even more since you can't get those out o.O!! Anyway, my maxells are working just great right now.Oh, it has nothing to do with the RH10, it's just most people are rough when inserting and ejecting discs without knowing it, just assuming you can be rough. Silvadragon
Metal shutters in the good ol' floppy discs were hell! so i guess i shouldn't b putting ne generic discs in my MZ-NH900. Im sticking with Sony discs ;pOh yeah, b kind to u md, press stop and WAIT for it to TURN OFF! then eject the disc. I noe i few dickheads hu have fucked up their mds by ejecting the discs immediately without stoping the unit and the metal shutter got caught inside and that was bubbye! So b kind and do the right thing and just hope ur Maxell discs don't get caught inside Hope it gets fixed mate! ;pMoral: Be kind to your MD, and it'll b kind back to you. (im not implying that u 'ghostdog' haven't been kind). Its something everybody should know Edited May 9, 2005 by Silvadragon
hobgoblin
its strange that they cant design them so that the edge of the shutter is coverd. that way there is nothing to snag on while removing its allso strange that they have not made the md player lock the eject system until the system is properly parked. but then neither was there an ability to have a floppy station be locked until properly unmounted (removing the floppy in the middle of a write is a classic). jadeclaw
its allso strange that they have not made the md player lock the eject system until the system is properly parked. Actually they have. But due to the construction, parking as such is not necessary. However, the Eject IS locked, when the recorder is writing. You always hear the characteristic Zzzzip everytime you edit something, press Record etc.
ghostdog
well I managed to take the unit apart, seems the back end of the disc carriage was damaged - probably from pushign it in too hard. But the only way to get the disc in was to push hard, aarggh. When I put a disk in now the thing just keeps whirring and doesnt settle (plus it wont eject and I have to dismantle again). anyhow looks like ill have to order another carriage unit (how this can be done in limerick I don't know). Another prob I had after dismantling the unit is that the OLED is off now, I can see where the cable connects between the top section and the lower section......If anyone's interested how the unit looks underneath I can take some pics....I am guessing that in the future (if I ever fix it!) when I want to use my old maxell disks it will be best to just pull the plastic shutter completely off before putting it in the unit (they come off and on pretty easy without damage, unlike the metal ones). ghostdog
have sent it off to sony in dublin.hopefully theyll fix it for free and ignore the "only valid in japan" bit of the warranty.....
Christopher
I'm surprised they accepted the unit..did you not tell them it was from Japan? You may be the first one to send them this unit, you know..they're gonna be really confused at it.

jonny mac
Sounds to me like the carriage was slightly damaged from the start and you probably should have sent it straight back and got a new one. When something goes wrong it's best not to force a unit to do something it doesn't seem to want to.
Silvadragon
My 900 went off for about 3 months until i scared the shits out of the people i had bought mine from, cos they had to replace a 'japanese part'. Like how on earth is 'nipple stick' joystick meant to b made in japan wen it says: Made in Malaysia on the the back? But i got a new machine and it came in the bundle pack! So i gained ofcourse.Just hope the same thing doesn't happen to u Neway, i thought SOny was very fussy and always demands a receipt for warranty fixing, as far as i'm concerned Edited May 13, 2005 by Silvadragon
