My son has a HiMD Walman MZ-NH700. Copied lots of songs with SonicStage before and now it won't allow it, Gives this message. "Cannot use this disc as an audio disc because it was initalized by a progran other than SonicStage. Click Properties on the Device/Media panel and initalize the disc to use it as an audio disc." We did this and of course all the songs were erased and it still gives the same message. What's the problem? Thanks for the help. Running SonicStage 3.1.

Take out the disc.

Disconnect the recorder from the computer.

Remove the battery.

Wait one Minute.

Insert battery.

Insert disc.

Press and hold 'Menu' until the Menu appears.

Select 'Edit', then select 'Format'

Confirm.

That should solve the problem.

Another possible problem: PDA-Synchronisation software interfering here.

I tried your suggestion and it didn't work. What is PDA-Synchronisation software? Thanks for the help.

A PDA is a handheld computer like a Palm Pilot or Ipaq that can download and upload information to your desktop. The information goes via the USB port, so that could confuse SonicStage.

Can you use Edit on that disc at all with the MD unit? Erase All?

If not, hook up via SonicStage again and see if Sonic Stage is still seeing tracks that you can erase.

Elisa : I'm also having the exact same problem on my MD player, model MZ-NH600D..and so far, nothing is working. However, I've done a System Restore recently..and didn't save any music files on my computer since I store them on my MD. I'm wondering if that could be the reason why my SonicStage 2.0 isn't recognizing my MD? Ask your son if he's recently done something to his computer as well...and I hope we can get this fixed smile.gif

System Restore definitely messes up SonicStage. But SonicStage 2.0 was awful anyway.

Purge it from your computer by following this FAQ:

Don't forget to remove all the registry entries. Then get SStage 3.1 from Sony (preferred) or from the Downloads link at the top of this page. It does work better. You may also want to use the MDAC repair tool in Downloads, it solves a lot of problems.

Have you tried formatting the disc on the unit itself?

enter the menu, go to "edit", then down to "format".

I've had discs do this before from things like downloads getting interrupted, but reformatting them from either SS or on the unit itself always fixed the problem immediately. Not sure why it's staying like that for you.

I just had this same problem today with my NH-900. I was trying to download tracks from SS3.0 to the machine on a disc I had only used via Simple Burner. I thought this was the issue, until I saw on the forum that Windows System Restore can create this issue. I believe it - today was the first time I used my Sony Stuff since a system restore and both Simple Burner and SS 3.0 crashed a couple times before I even got to this point. And - perhaps unbelievably - I've never had problems with the software before. Anyway - even more annoying - my disc was COMPLETELY erased, even though I chose not to re-initialize it. I shut down SS, disconnected the player, tried to listen to the disc and I got "CANNOT PLAY OR RECORD". Pressed play, then it whirred away and said "NO TRACKS." NOT happy. I've just upgraded to SS 3.1 and I'm not getting the error msg regarding the disc anymore on SS, but this disc is indeed erased.

Post #8 in the following topic said to run Objsir.exe. What is this exactly, and is it relevant? The post was referring to SS 2.3 but the same problem.

I had the same problem with SonicStage 2.1 and MD Simple Burner. It seems like there is some conflict with using System Restore in Windows XP (and I think Windows ME has it too) and Sony's software. So if you have recently performed a System Restore in Windows, then that's probably the source of your problem.  To fix things, you have to run Ojbsir.exe (this should be in your SonicStage folder under Program Files). Part of this process involves un-installing and re-installing the Sony software (you'll be prompted after running Objsir.exe). This seems to fix whatever kind of crap that gets broken after you Sytem Restore. It worked for me anyways. Awesomely enough, there seems to be no mention of this conflict or ways of repairing it in the Manual that came with my Hi-MD recorder.

I am really irritated my disc was ERASED!! Thankfully I can (but not easily) find that music again elsewhere.

BTW - how the heck do I paste in the webpage I quoted as a link?

Objsir.exe is located in the SonicStage program folder [usually in C:\Program Files\Sony\SonicStage]. Objsir.exe is a System Information Tool to restore music files that have been rendered unplayable for some reason.

In addition, I have edited your post above to reflect the quote you wish to include from "post #8" from another thread.

Thanks for the edit. I wasn't clear though - I wanted to put the web address for the topic as a link, so that people interested in this subject could quickly refer to that relevant topic.

Step 3 of the FAQ is removing the registry entries, sorry not to be clear. Sony's own uninstall can leave things behind that can cause trouble, and doing this makes sure they're gone.

3. Start -> Run -> regedit. The 'Registry Editor' utility should appear on your screen. Delete the references to OpenMG located under 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Sony Corporation/Sonicstage' and 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Sony Corporation' by right-clicking on the entries.

I followed the instructions given but it still doesn't work. However, I'm not sure if I completed this step (3) correctly. Should I delete everything under the HKEY keys or just if I see OpenMG written there? There was no mention of OpenMG in the registry when I looked. THanks again for the help.

Whoa! Don't delete all the HKEY keys!!!!

Look and see what's under Software/Sony Corporation/SonicStage and Software/Sony Corporation. In mine (with SS 3.1 installed and, knock on wood, working) under Sony Corporation I see OpenMG and OpenMG Jukebox, and under SonicStage I don't see any OpenMG. Yours may be different.

It sounds from your other post like SonicStage is mostly installed except for the WMP codecs, so I suggest leaving the Registry alone for now .
