A Good Microphone To Use To Record Speech?

I want to use a HiMd recorder to keep a journal and record some interviews whilst travelling. I’m wondering what sort of microphone is good for recording speech?

I want to keep the equipment as compact as possible and to that effect I’ve been looking at a couple of Sony’s:

ECM-MS907 & ECM-719

They are both electret condenser mics; are they suitable for speech recording? Any other suggestions up to $150?

I intend to use the mic pre-amp on the MD recorder rather than an external box. Any help appreciated as I’m not up on microphones.

for speech (interviews, lectures...) I use a Sony ECM-C10 through mic -in on my NH900 and that works fine (but only for speech!). It cost me about €40 so $48 but that was already some time ago

I would highly recommend a Visivox Technologies mike. They're assembled in Canada and sell direct to the public. They're extremely high quality and very competitive in terms of price, so you'll likely end up paying less than 60 USD and will still end up with something compareable to one costing twice that.

They sometimes sell them on eBay, where they can be had cheaper.

Thanks,

I'll check those recommendations out.

ECM-719

It's very small and unobtrusive and stereo of course. There's an internal small watch type battery as well which lasts for ages and ages.

I use it with the NH1 but it will work with any of the other models.

Another advantage is that it has a DECENT length of cord between microphone and plug -- I don't like the type where the mike just plugs straight into the MD unit.

With this one you can clip the mike anywhere ("CIA" or "FBI" style) while you are doing your recording -- trouser pocket for example --and you can just forget it.

Good for music as well.

Cheers
