Sony Md Home Hifi

I've just gone and bought a Sony CMTM373NT home hifi, with the MiniDisc player recorder built-in, tempted by Amazon's price of just £147.

I'm assuming as it's Sony the quality will be top notch, but I can't find any reviews of the unit online (other than 3 on Amazon's product page).

Anyone here got any experience or opinion of the MD hifi?

thanks

Andrew

I have a 333 and love the unit, if the 373 is half as good it would still be a good buy.

For a difference the 373 does not have a cassette player/recorder or a remote due to the specs I saw.

I have approx 200 cassettes which I am in the process of transfering to MD and I am very impressed with the quality of the transfer with the 333.

Enjoy your new unit.

There is confusion as there are two 373's.

The newer CMT373 does have cassete and a remote.

I have the unit in question and love it. The sound quality is excellent for it's size (don't expect too much base) and the recording/editing options are abundant. Plus you can connect it to the pc via usb cable and use something like iTunes to playback your mp3's (The supplied program is pretty bad, but it does allow to control 120 songs via unit's remote control).

All in all, an excellent hifi.

I'm pleased to read good reviews of the CMT373 hi fi unit from those who know! I'll know tomorrow too, when mine is delivered.

According to Amazon's product page, the unit does have a casette and remote - can you imagine life without remotes!

I wonder if amazon can offer such a good price on the hifi because their might be a new Hi-MD version coming out??

A "HiMD" version is out already - the CMT-AH10.

In any case, I can vouch for the 333NT and say it's an excellent unit. Provides all the advanced editing features you would expect from a deck, and stylish too! The 4x CD->MD dubs are a boon, but you can also record in real-time to get the benifits of Type-R encoding. It's a snap to record from casette/radio to MD as well. Sound quality is good - it's certainly more than powerful enough for everyday listening - bass is clear and not too overpowering. If anything, the unit is a little dependent on the remote and PC software for functionality but that is only a minor problem.

When you get your unit, install the PC-Link Drivers, M-Crew, and the NetMD drivers for the unit from the supplied CD. Then, install SonicStage 3.1 from the Net, rather than version 1.5 which it ships with on the disc.

That is a good price actually.

I paid about the same for it, but from Sony's eBay store.

Excellent!! That line about being able to record from cassette and radio to MD really makes me look forward to getting the hifi.

Who needs podcasts when you can just record direct?!

I too have the previous generation shelf unit, which we got for the kitchen. I copied all my wife's music to LP2 MDs, which take up much less space than the random pile of CDs that would eventually accumulate before being put away only to build up again.

I routinely use the High-Speed CD->MD dubbing feature which is quite nice. I'm really impressed with the sound on these speakers -- the bass isn't going to shake the floorboards, but it's quite nice and clear at volume. Tape-MD dubbing works really well (the tape deck is auto-reverse), although I noticed that the MD doesn't stop recording during silent periods, so a little editing will be necessary.

I'll probably be looking to pick up another shelf unit for my daughter by year-end, but I'm not sure about the NetMD version -- does the system work well without a computer attached, or are some things no longer possible without a computer? Otherwise I'll just trawl eBay for a pre-NetMD system...

Saaron - the NetMD shelf units can work perfectly well independently of a computer. Much like the NetMD portables, they merely have this new functionality on top of the old 'standard' recorder features. It's actually very nice to have the new NetMD features as well - for example track titling is much easier with a PC keyboard through the Sonicstage software than doing it on a remote control. So actually, you get the best of both worlds...

SonicStage allows you to use the unit as a NetMD - in this respect the unit is similar to a NetMD portable. Max 32x PC to MD transfers in LP4.

M-Crew allows you to control nearly all of the units functions from the PC - a boon for doing SF Edits, setting the record timer, doing MD dubs, setting program play, etc.

The unit also functions as a USB audio device.
