As a new Sony/SonicStage user I'm struggeling to find working solution for my music collection.

I converted some of my MP3 files to Atrac format - and transferred these to my NW-HD5. So far everything is working just fine.

But - I then wanted some of these files back to my PC at the office - I connected the HD5 to the PC - fired up SS - and hoped to just copy some files back.

This did not work at all. Message that the files are intended for another PC.... SS refuse to copy them to my work PC...

HOW can I make this working? How can I make my converted music to work on both computers?

I own the CD's and now I want to use the converted music on my home PC - my Sony device - and on my Work PC...

Is this not possible without a "real" backup device and by using SS's backup/restore functions?

Sony support in Norway can not help me with anything else than pointing me to Sony's website... woww...

So - all hint/tips/tricks are welcome... please help..

Welcome to the restricted world of Digital Rights Management. You think it's your music? Sony doesn't.

You're trying to do exactly what SonicStage is designed to prevent--and about the only thing it does well.

Your HD5 is supposed to be the endpoint for your music library. It's not a way to convey your music from computer to computer.

Your simplest solution is to take the CDs to the office and rip them again. I don't know if SimpleBurner works with the HD5, but if it does you can put the CD tracks onto your player directly, without making copies on the computer.

They'll sound better too, because you haven't converted them to MP3 in between.

Or burn the MP3s to a CD-R and transfer those with the SonicStage at the office.

Sounds strange to me ... but after all the readings I've dont the last hours I guess you're ringht.

However - I read somewhere that if both PC's - and the Sony device - are "authorized" through the SS Connect, the songs should be playable on all three devices. That doestn't help me anyway since I'm located in Norway - and the Connect service is not opened up in our region of the world yet...

So what I need, i guess, would be some Authorization tool to use on my local library and devices - so that I personally can make the neccessary authorizations smile.gif

Keep it up Sony - make friends ... *not* You just lost one more! Thing I'll return the device and opt for an Archos Gemini device instead...

I'm not sure why Connect wouldn't be available in Norway. Isn't it just an internet address? I can verify that you can transport your music between up to five computers using your HD unit. It works fine with my NW HD3. It doesn't work for mp3 files though, only atrac. I don't know if that's a bug or intentional, since you can easily move your mp3 files using the HD unit as a straight hard disk.

If you can use the player as a data drive, just drop all your music into it as data, and upload it to your PC.

The "autorize" option only works for music you have bought from Connect, IIRC.

The best option though, seems to be importing the original MP3 to your work PC.

Actually no. If you rip Cds on one computer to atrac, and put them on the HD unit, you can copy them to another authorized computer. The files do not have to originate with Connect for this to work. I have a faster computer at home and have used it to rip cds to Sonicstage. I can transfer those files to another authorized computer in Sonicstage without putting them on the "data" side of the hard drive. This is a sensible move on Sony's part. It makes it much easier to keep a backup of your library on a second computer and saves a lot of time.
