Puma
For some reason the installtion went fine. It downloaded & installed about six programs all by itself.I start it up and it simply says "Cannot locate needed files related to Windows Media Format. Exiting SonicStage."That makes no sense to me. Does anyone know what to do or download in this case? I manually downloaded Windows Media Player 7.1 along with codecs & running Win 98. The Low Volta
you need the WMP9 codecs, it's not really important where to download them from but it is crucial where you put them on your PC...you have to put them in the exact folder the error while installing SS tells you to.as you would have found if you'd searched the software section a bit:- this one addresses the problem- and this one- and also this oneplease use the knowledge already present at MDCF, aka search before you ask!greetings, Volta

Now the installtion goes smoothly. But I'm back to the same problem I had when SonicStage installed fine. I did what you said & when I open SonicStage it still says "Cannot locate needed files related to Windows Media Format. Exiting SonicStage". I think this is seperate from the installtion issue. What do I need to do or download? I currently have Winmp 7.1 and running Windows 98. Puma
Thing is that I can't download Winmp 9 or Winmp 10. So I really don't know if the error message is just saying I need a newer Winmp even though it says Winmp 7.1 is good enough. Ddooeessnn'tt make any sense. Where does what/who say that WMP7.1 is good enough (seems strange when you need WMP9 codecs)?have you actually tried installing SS3.1 from connect? (and not with the MDCF standalone installer)
Puma
I guess the reason why I can't download Winmp 9 is my PC's fault. Just comes all displaced, no way of fixing that. So Winmp 9 and 10 are out of the question for my PC. And when I installed SS for the first time without any Winmp it simply said I need Winmp 7.1 or newer. I'm not sure that if I had Winmp 9 or 10 that it would furfill these "Missing Windows Media Files" from SS. Isn't Winmp 7.1 and Wmp9 codecs enough? Pretty much I'm giving it what it's asking for but I just don't know what that error message is asking for.I guess I need to know if Winmp 9 or 10 is essential to getting SS to work. If it is then I could easily do all this over again at a friend's PC. Solved. But if I don't need them then what are the files that SS says I am missing??And I haven't tried that other download. What would be the difference? Edited June 22, 2005 by Puma

If it is then I could easily do all this over again at a friend's PC. Solved. But if I don't need them then what are the files that SS says I am missing??I'm afraid I can't help you there..my software knowledge is too limited I guess (I was a Mac-user before and only moved to PC when XP was about, so I really don't know anything about Win98 at all)And I haven't tried that other download. What would be the difference?well, for one thing...they normally don't give any "you need to download WMP9 codec"-errors the MDCF-standalone installer is a betaversion of a project by someone here on these forums as a last option for ppl who can't connect their PC to the net and still need to install SS... if however you can connect to the net, yoou'd be much safer by installing the (equally free) official full install from connect (Sony's music shop) as there are a lot of known (mostly easy to fix ...but not always...) bugs with the standalone installer and almost none with the official oneso give it a try:- uninstall completely as described here- choose your SS from this list (just by the language you wan't, because unles you want to buy music on the net from Sony...which I wouldn't advise you to... you won't need Connect, but it doesn't matter if it's in there either) and run the installgood luck, Volta
