A newb here, trying to upload a group of tracks from music lessons from Hi-MD to Sony VAIO running Windows XP with SP2, SonicStage 3.1. The first track in the group loads fine, but then it seems like the computer loses contact with the MD. Any ideas ?

Also, I'm really concerned about losing the ability to upload these lessons with the ridiculous one-time only provisions, and feel really stuck. Should I analog upload (from headphone jack to computer's mic jack) to my sound card just to be safe?

or get Totalrecorder and do a digital realtime upload

Can you explain more clearly what you mean by "the computer loses contact with the MD"? Does SonicStage still show a list of tracks that are on the MD? Are you opening the group folder and highlighting all the tracks you want uploaded? Do you get an error message? Anything you can describe more clearly might help.

Here is the TotalRecorder method, which should give you better quality than headphone-via-soundcard. It's near the end of the post.

First, thank you all for the responses. I'm going to try TR tonight. And I wrote to Sony about these issues and will share their response.

The computer/SS seems to lose contact with the MD because the omgjbox.exe error code flashes momentarily and then the right hand box and the transfer arrow buttons all gray out. Clicking on the right hand box or the top right transfer button does nothing: no devices are identified.

The first two tracks do show in the left hand box of SS, and the MD screen shows the message that these tracks were transferred to SS on 7/7/05. (Although the tracks cannot actually be played on SS because "there is a license problem in Open MG"- another huge source of frustration that I'm hoping someone can help me understand: these are microphone-recorded music lessons: no license needed/available- I think I may have screwed this up by uninstalling and reinstalling SS 3.1, etc. per the older thread. )

Try recording some throwaway tracks on another disc, connecting and uploading. Is it always just two tracks and then adios?

Have you unplugged other USB devices and tried connecting the MD to a different USB port, in case it's just a connection problem? Similarly, could it be something as simple as a bad USB cord? You can find the same USB to mini-USB cord at any electronics store, because BlackBerry and other PDA's use them, and it might be worth a try.

And definitely keep hounding Sony about the "licensing" for your uploads. Did you uninstall/reinstall SS after uploading? Not sure if that makes SS think it's a different computer.

You might also try installing 3.1 again with the online installer if you can, on top of your current installation. It will detect that you already have it installed, but if you tell it to reinstall it will give you the whole thing again, including, with any luck, an OpenMG that works this time. That was how I finally got SS 3.1 working on my computer.
