xscion
I'm somewhat interested in purchasing an MZ-RH10. I'd probably get the US version even though I prefer the Japanese LCD remote and cradle, but since the US can be found quite a bit cheaper...I'd have to fold and get that. Now, I have had MD before...many years ago...let's say about 6 years ago? There was a bundle that contained a portable Sony MD player and a home audio recording deck. I enjoyed it very much even though it never took off.Lately I've been looking at this MZ-RH10 in comparison to many of the competitive flash memory players that are out there. If anyone could give me a comparison between the RH10 and competitive flash players, that would be great.I've heard the RH10 is a second generation MD portable and the third generation was being worked on now. How long would it be before this third generation is released for public purchase? Is it worth holding off until then? Can't think of anything else for now...thanks in advance guys. veezhun
First of all.. welcome to MDCFSecondly, what are your needs? What is the primary reason you want to purchase the Hi MD? Is it recording mainly, occasionally or playback mostly?I own the Rh10 and can give you some suggestions if i know what your requirements are

Later on I might get into some recording but I honestly don't know much about what you can do with these little guys as far as recording goes. I want the native MP3 playback, and I think the idea of being able to use Hi-MD for data now is very interesting as well.Oh, and thanks for the welcome! veezhun
IMHO, Using the hi md for data is just too slow. Dont even compare the speeds to a flash drive or an external HDD.. the Hi MD really shines when used as a recorder..as far as Mp3 playback goes on the 2nd gen Hi md's, a lot of people are not happy with it. search the forums for mp3 and rh10.. Hi MD playback quality with atrac nonetheless is awe-frickkin-some.. you also have a PCM option for totally uncompressed sound..You can record concerts, interviews, speeches, just random sounds, etc etc with a mic. Record off a sound board using the line in and record from a digital source using optical in.. not to mention the USB downloads..for playback only/mostly, i suggest you look else where. you can go for sony hd5 in the HDD category or the nw507 in the flash category..for both recording/playback, i doubt you will get a better device in the market than a Hi MD
xscion
I appreciate the help. One last question for you...You see a lot of accessories for other players that allow you to strap them on your arm while jogging or otherwise being active. Can an MD player also handle that type of shock?
ROMBUSTERS
All MDs since their introduciton have included anti-shock. They now also include Sony's G-Shock mechanism. From my experiences I have never had my MD skip, while jogging, driving over crazy bumps or whatnot - although like anything with a memory buffer, they do have the 'chance' to skip. under normal use and circumstances you should never hear them skip
xscion
That's good to know. I remember my very old original unit and how hard it was to skip. I was just wondering if you could jog without damaging anything while not skipping.
veezhun
jog away my friend.. use an arm band though.. and dont bump into anything
ROMBUSTERS
Also with the introduction of PCM it only makes sense that HiMDs have a larger memory buffer (anyone know the exact size) which would provide tons of time for a compressed codec

One last question for you...You see a lot of accessories for other players that allow you to strap them on your arm while jogging or otherwise being active. Can an MD player also handle that type of shock?←I was in an accident last winter in my car. I had my NetMD laying on my passenger seat, connected via cassette adapter. Even though the thing flew 2-3 feet forward, it never skipped. And it's still in pretty good shape....Skipping will most likely never be an issue. And as far as arm-mounting, Sony themselves sell cases for MD portables that strap 'round your arm. You can find these pretty easily even in stores like Best Buy.Good Luck!
