Hello,

New french guy on this forum, may somebody answer this question:

since a lot of years, DAT continue to be THE reference for semi-professionnal recording (without regarding for Direct-to-disk or FlashCard units).

I made some live records with both Hi-MD (PCM mode) and Sony DAT (TCD-D3) and i found no differences (dowload records on my PC with USB for the MD and SPDIF for the DAT). Records with done through line in jack with serious mikes (AKG C451 ans others) and Behringer preamps.

Nobody did'nt gave me a consistant response about an evident supremacy of the DAT, regarding the performances of the last generation of HI-MD. I talk only about record quality (S/N ratio, Dinamics, bandwidth)

Thanks !

I've in effect replaced my HHB PortaDat - one of the more expensive DAT recorders you could buy - with a Hi-MD recorder. Obviously it depends exactly what you need, but tonight for instance I was doing a classical recording session direct to computer using a Motu Traveler and used the Hi-MD recorder fed from the optical output of the Traveler as an always-running backup. In Hi-SP it would happily record a day's sessions onto one disc. With DAT I'd have to keep an eye on the time remaining clock.
