Hope not too sound too ranty.

I got myself a couple of ER-4P for my birthday. Hard to get used to them, since these things go inside of your ear. I try them the first day, and I loved them. Very nice bass response (If a bit less than the Sony MDR EX 71, but I believe this is because the sound from the Ety's is the true representation of the waveform, without any coloration like the one caused by other phones). It's wonderful to discover matissations/matices/shades/ tones in your music that you had never heard before... while riding the bus!

Yes sir. These babies do block external noise. It's a bit tricky to get a perfect seal, however, when you do, only really loud people (Like the crazy chatty girl who's miffed at her boyfriend for cheating on her, while on the cell phone, or the Taz-voiced retiree telling of his adventures in the war of Tang-aman-dapio) will get through. This time, it's your music the one that drowns out the external sounds, and not the other way around. Loud diesel engine, meet acoustic isolation foam.

However...

The horror. The problem that plagued my EX-71's is back, just in reverse order. You see, there was something about those Sony's that made the right earbud sound a bit muffled. The bass was there, but it just didn't feel that punchy. After several tests using mono versions of music I know very well, , and switching the phones (right piece on the left ear and so with the other) I came to the conclusion that either the left one was too powerful, or the right one was crippled.

I'm experiencing this with the Etymotics too. However, it's the left one this time the one that lacks the deep, "moist" and punchy bass. And yes, I switched pieces. I was thinking it could be that the my left ear canal is a bit narrower than the right one, but no. The bass comes better on the right piece, period. The difference is not as bad as with the EX-71's, but it IS there.

I hope I can make good use of the warranty, and that Etymotic can provide me with a replacement.

Unless you get a pair with the same problem as mine, the ER-4P are highly recommended. And yes, they leave Noise cancellation systems in the dust. Now if someone could combine them both.

(Yes, the earwax filters are clean. I just replaced them. tongue.gif )

Long Live True-SP ATRAC Type R,

Syrius.
