Smallan
Hi, I've done some field recording on my MD walkman recorder (an MZ-R410). It's worked pretty well and I'm thinking of buying another MD recorder. Is there a model that sets time code efficiently? I have tried setting the track mark to 5 mins but the unit still automatically records other track nombers at silences or whatever and so it makes it hard to find a recorded segment by time. It's also inconvenient to scroll back from more than 100 tracks to track 1. I'm currently using line in with a shotgun mic attached to a little pre amp module I rigged up, so the level is a little low but I can easily boost it once it's on computer. I'll be looking at second hand units on ebay or whatever. Any suggestions?
soundalike
The automatic insertion of trackmarks is a real pain as most users here will testify. The only way I've got round it is to set the levels as loud as possible (but then you risk clipping) to discourage the unit from making its marks. Of course, this isn't appropriate for most live recording so it's best to read the 'totally gapless recording' topic here and do the editing on your computer. I've found it almost impossible to listen back to a live recording on the MD (before computer editing) as I usually get around 50 tracks for every concert!forgot to say, if you record from the microphone input and ensure that auto time mark is switched off, then you won't get any auto trackmarking.I think this is true of all units but others here will know better. Don't want to have my level too high as it's easier to deal with low level and boost (in Adobe Audition) than it is to deal with clipped peaks. My current recorder doesn't have mic input, I convert my mic to line level. What you say about finding my segments on the computer is probably my best option, just don't try and find my segments on the MD itself. Just thought there might be a unit that deals with timecode in the same way DV tape does. Thanks again.
A440
Once you have uploaded, SonicStage does have a "Combine" function that will get rid of unwanted track marks. Also take a look at Dex Otaku's instructions on Gapless playback.
