Indeed, I have yet to figure out myself how to do this, and yes it is a problem.

the strange thing is when you get the product, the hold switch is turned on from factory, so perhaps there is a method. So perhaps this is one method to get the hold switch to work:

when you are done listening, pause the player, and press the hold button until it says hold, then let the player turn off, and then see what happens when you press a button, since my assumption the hold screen will come on and then the player will turn off.

Page 67 of the manual indicates that you cannot activate hold if the unit is switched off.

As Ascariss says:

You must first turn it on then press the hold button until "Hold On" appears and let the unit turn itself off with the hold function enabled and the controls locked.

I can confirm that this is the way you get it to hold when off. It works. Why couldn't sony just make a normal hold switch/slider that can be moved from hold to normal? I like the NWA a great deal, but this is one thing that annoys me slightly. Were Sony trying to save space or costs when they thought about adding this feature, or come up with some radical way of restyling the Walkman?
