A440
Have you tried a brand new battery, not an old recharged one? That kind of behavior is exactly what MD does when it thinks the battery is about to die: it saves what you have recorded and shuts off. So something is making it think that the battery is dying. Although it's not the solution since you want to be portable, just for experiment's sake try AC power and see if it has the same problem. greenmachine
If you're using rechargeables and don't care much about maintenance, there's a good chance they suffer from the 'memory effect'. This makes them to a large part unusable, even when seemingly fully charged. Try to recover them with a few full discharge-charge cycles. If the situation doesn't improve, it's time for new ones. The battery university has lots of valuable information about battery maintenance for future reference.
raintheory
This same thing happened to both of my HiMD recorders before I had fully discharged the batteries a few times. Apparently when the unit feels that it is in danger of not having enough power to do any final editing/TOC writing, it will stop everything to perform the TOC edit, and then shut down.Leave your unit playing (not recording, or it will stop beforehand) until the battery is completely drained, then fully recharge it. Do this a few times to get it used to the idea...
