The S1 only has a line-in jack, which needs a strong signal. A mic jack is made for the weaker signal of a microphone. To record loud sounds, you will need a mic PLUS a battery box. To record quieter sounds, you will need a mic PLUS a preamplifer, which would be more expensive than getting a new MD unit with a microphone jack built in.

A good basic mic is the Sound Professionals BMC-2. A decent super cheap mic is the "New Stereo Lapel Microphone for Minidisc" that you can usually find on Ebay.
