I just bought a Rh-910 for field recordings.

Tested it out, but I wasn't pleased with the results. My first real test was just me walking around my building, going to lunch, etc.

But when I played it back on the player. it seemed like it broken into segments that would play and repeat itself 3 times before going to the next segment.

Then when I brought it into Sonic Stage, I got an error transfering the clip...but when I tried to we transfer the clip, I got a message saying that the clip had been transfered from another computer (when it'd been on that computer).

This is my first MD Recorder/Player. The enviroment I'm going to be recording in does require movement (i'm a photographer and the MD is going to do an audio version of what takes place during my work.

I'm about to ship it back to JR, if i'm overlooking something please help.

I was using a Hi-MD disk to record.

Thanks

What mic you used and version of SS?

i'm using the sp-bmc-2 (the ones that go in your ear) and i just downloaded Sonic Stage 3.2 from off the site

I don't want to have to return it, but it looks like its become a bad investment, folks let me know if i'm doing something wrong.

A couple of thoughts, hopefully helpful to you, the symptoms sound familiar -

  • MD recorders are very sensitive to vibration and movement during recording. They can skip if moved during the burn. The same applies to CD burners to an even greater extent. That said, we haven't noticed this problem with our RH910s and RH10s.
  • We've found that a new machine needs to be broken in by recording PCM (silence is ok) and filling a Hi-MD disc, then uploading via Sonic Stage. This distributes the lubricants - should have been done at the factory, IMHO. After this, our units perform flawlessly and with greater reliability than our DAT decks, just as expected.

You could also have a defective unit.

On average, most "ears" we've asked put the recording quality and mic preamp of the RH(9)10s very close to rigs costing well over $1k, so we believe that, barring defects, they represent a very good investment.

I had some odd results that sound a bit similar to your problem. I don't think I had repeated recordings, but I used to think it had jumbled the order of the segments. But I'm not a 100% certain as I couldn't figure out exactly what it had done. However I changed the time stamp setting, and also upgraded to 3.2 and that fixed the problem for me. This was on a MH700 though. haven't had a problem since.

yeah thats what the problem was, the timing was jumbled.

whatever happened last would be first, whatever happned first would be in the middle, chopped up some kind of way, it was just all screwed up.

i am STRONGLY considering sending the player back. STRONGLY.

i'll probably call the company today to make arrangements.

Just to respond to something potentially confusing from sparky191 higher up in the thread:

DO NOT combine tracks on the unit before uploading by removing any track marks you made. SonicStage will choke if it finds the remnants of a track mark. Upload the tracks as you recorded them. Then you can use SonicStage to combine them if necessary.

It sounds like sparky191 is doing just that, but a quick read might be misleading--and you've suffered enough.

I have read where combining tracks before transfering to the PC has caused problems for people. Personally I've never had a problem with it. While I do, do that sometimes, I actually meant the time stamp setting. Which AFAIK changes the intervals at which a time stamp is automatically inserted. So instead of 3 mins intervals I have it set to 20 mins etc. I can't remember exactly.
